What Are the Most Popular Colors for Labradoodle Dogs?
As you may already know, the Labradoodle is a cross between a Labrador Retriever and a Poodle. Because both of these breeds come in a variety of different colors, the Labradoodle may exhibit any of them or a combination of several. For the most part, Labradoodles tend to be solid-colored dogs, though there are always exceptions to the rule. Keep reading to learn more about the different colors and color combinations in Labradoodle dogs.
Labrador Retriever and Poodle Coloration
The Labrador Retriever is a large breed of dog and one of the most popular breeds in the United States. In fact, this breed is consistently ranked the highest according to AKC registration statistics. Labrador Retrievers come in three recognized colors – black, chocolate, and yellow. Though black is simply a solid black, the other two colors come in a range of shades. Chocolate Labs may range from medium to dark brown and yellow Labs may range from cream to fox red. The Poodle comes in a much wider range of colors, both solid and multi-colored. Some of the acceptable colors for the breed include white, black, brown, gray, silver, beige, apricot, cream, red, and sable as well as patterns like brindle, phantom, sable, and parti-color.
The Most Common Colors for Labradoodles

In addition to coming in a variety of colors, the Labradoodle’s coat comes in several different lengths and textures. Some Labradoodles are born with loose curls similar to the Poodle’s coat while others look more like shaggy retrievers – many dogs fall somewhere in the middle of the spectrum. The Labradoodle’s coat may not shed excessively, but it definitely will shed and you should be prepared to do some maintenance. Plan to brush your dog’s coat at least every other day to keep shedding under control – using a slicker brush will help to remove loose and dead hairs. You may also need to have your Labradoodle’s coat clipped every 8 to 12 weeks to prevent it from becoming too shaggy. Bathe your Labradoodle as needed and always use a mild, dog-friendly shampoo that won’t irritate his delicate skin. When you do, make sure to keep his ears dry to prevent ear infections.
As a mixed breed, you can’t predict exactly how Labradoodle puppies are going to come out. If you breed two dogs of the same or similar color, there is a good chance that the puppies will be that color too, though you must always account for recessive genes. No matter what color your Labradoodle ends up being, you can count on him to be a friendly, loyal companion that will stick by your side for as long as he lives (or as long as you let him).
