F1 Puppys Coat

Postby Gailie » Mon Jan 25, 2010 3:34 am

We have had our puppy Trixie now for 3 weeks, she will be 12 weeks on Tue. Her coat is starting to change on her back now and has waves appearing. There are loads of different coats on Labradoodles, can anyone give me an idea of what Trixies coat might turn out like as she gets older and the best way to groom her. Thanks in advance xx

Hi! And WELCOME!
Trixie is a little cutie!
I had one that looked similar in my last litter....he looked like a lab at 7 weeks old (in this picture)
The older pic is at 2 years old. He is an F1b that looked like an F1, & was the only pup in the litter with a shorter coat.
With him, his coat was smooth, and then as the weeks went on, silky, wavy hair started growing from underneath.
This coat was perfect for his owner as she hikes all the time in the mountains ...

Now Jac had a picture of a pup that looked similar, & I believe that it's coat was longer...perhaps she can post it.
Time will tell on her coat, how long it will get, but I believe she have the scruffy, Disney type coat, that should be very easy to care for.

Welcome, and beautifull dood. I breed F1b so I am more experienced with them. I can post a pic of our Hershey as a pup, she was a very flat coated F1 that has grown into a nice fleece non shedding coat. There is one of our F1bs in the second picture for comparison. I think she is the exception rather than the rule with flat coated puppies. I'll also post a pick of a firends dood that stayed shorter and has a sheddign coat for comparison. Sorry they are chocolate and not yellow..

And as an adult, coat is clipped short for summer but is a wavy fleece coat

And the shedding straighter coat.

I would say ask the breeder! Hopefully you found a breeder that you have a good relationship with. The breeder may have a better idea, especially if that particular breeding had been done before. I know with my girls we would give two very different answers. One mom tends to have flat coats that get extremely curly at about 7 -8 months. I actually passed up a pup from this litter because I didn't like how flat her coat was. When I got a picture a few months later I could have died. She was gorgeous and had an amazing coat. Our other mom has pups that go the opposite way. Her pups tend to get flatter. We know if any of her pups are remotely flat that we will have a very Labby pup in the end. We often answer this question for our families, usually with a picture of a similar pup as an adult. That said, my guess would be your pup will be fairly straight but will develop a wavy section that runs along his back. But thats just a guess :)

Welcome to the forum!

Lucky you! You have a typical F1 coat...the easiest to groom!

You will probably have shedding...it can be a little or a lot, unfortunately...so brushing regularly is necessary to keep the shedding down.

Other than that, you will just need to do the regular stuff, ear cleaning, nail cleaning, a bath when he needs it. Easy! You probably won't have a matting issue.

I have pictures of coats that are similar... the puppy picture is first, followed by the same dog as an adult.

Amazingly so! You would not believe how much Marley resembles my Amelia Jane too! (Only his coat is much softer than hers...but the coloring and curl are so similar!)

for me, i say it's so hard to tell as a f1 labradoodle's coat can keep changing every 6 weeks or so for the 1st 1.5yrs

Max went from labby to somewhat curly back to labby then totally scruffy with some waves around back of his head and back
with tiny curls on bottom of his legs.

Welcome! I had just noticed that Tia's coat changed yet again and she will be 3 years old in March. You have a beauty there. I can't wait to see more as time goes by.
