A friend wants to stud her mini-pin and I told her to MAKE SURE to require a very recent Brucellosis test on the other dog.
Seems to me that there were a couple disscussions on this subject.....
as the owner of the stud, doing natural breeding, what all tests should be required so that your stud does not pick-up anything?
I notice on-line that alot of breeders do only AI, yet I hear that it is not always successful leaving you with a vet bill to boot.
I am contemplating studding Marley, so am curious myself.

I think that the brucellosis testing is necessary on BOTH dogs, EVERY time they breed. It is a disease that is not only sexually transmitted but can be spread through casual contact too...nose to nose, for instance. Once the puppies are infected some or all of them may die. Once a breeding dog is infected, it should never be bred again.
This is a serious risk and so easily tested...it is a relatively inexpensive test too.
I think that as a stud owner you still need to be sure that the bitch is fuly tested because you are promoting the birth of puppies and you need to take it as responsibly as you would if you own the female.
Bottom line? I think it is important, every time, to consider the consequence of the mating to the lives of the puppies...so health is a number one priority.
In addition, you will be protecting the health of your stud. But...your stud should be tested too, even though he has not been used before. Puppies can be born carriers for brucellosis.

JUDI...........the brucellosis test is mandatory on both Dam AND Sire for every natural breeding. NOW if you have a dam/sire that is doing only
AI and never has been bred naturally, then the OTHER breeding dog needs Brucellosis
Brucellosis can cause a Dam to miscarry a litter of pups too.

Other than that, all shots/vaccinations etc should be up-to-date
then check for papers/results on Hips, DNA, pra/prcd or cerf ETC
ALSO what kind of temperament , any training? like therapy, CGC, etc
as it sheds a little more light on temperament

Very, very scarey! The really scarey thing is that she operates a boarding facility/doggy daycare & lives there...
I have visited SO MANY websites that I don't remember where I read where the kennel required a very recent brucellosis test AND clearance on other tests. Perhaps the other tests they were referring to were the bitch's "papers/results on Hips, DNA, pra/prcd or cerf ETC ". I was wondering if they required a test for worm? or even giardia? Who knows...

I really did my homework from the start when I bred Tuesday. Both our dogs had recent brucellosis tests, and dad has produced 5 generations of healthy, quality pups. His direct offspring have become breeding stock for two different Guide dog organizations & several of his sons have become service dogs...one is said to be able to sense seizures before the onset!
Eventually I would like to get a female for Marley, but will take my time until I can find the perfect fleece-coated red GD or LD female.
He passed PAWSitiveID in flying colors, was CERT tested & now all I have left is hips & elbows which I think I am going to go with PENNHIP. Marley's dad tested PennHIP 90 percentile..DI 0.35, and throws this to his off-spring so hopefully Marley will test good to! The fact he had such great red lines in him was frosting on the cake.
The downside, I think, is that he has a wool/fleece coat. Seems that the wavey fleece is what people want.
As far as who I breed too....I would only breed as though I were selling the litter myself, meaning, tested so that I could stand behind them.
Hopefully I have all my bases covered....and yes, if I do breed him, I will definitely proceed with caution!
(Sheesh!.....and people wonder why tested dogs cost more!!! )
