As many of you know, I got Gray as a rehome a little over a week ago. He already knew Gray as his name, so I started using it, but it just doesn't seem to suit him. He isn't gray in color or personality! He doesn't miss his past life at all and I'm thinking maybe he needs a new name for his new home and new life. Any thoughts/experiences on changing a dog's name? I would only change to one he seemed to like. _________________ Susan, Pringle and Finn

I don't dislike the name Gray (it is short for Grayer), it just doesn't seem to match his goofy personality. I tried Finn this evening and he seems to like it. He responds and actually may have better manners! I had been calling him Finn for about an hour, just to see what he thought of it, then for the first time he didn't steal the ball from Pringle when we were playing. He looked at it and then leaned into me. I said "what a good boy Finnie" and I swear he smiled up at me. No final decisions yet. _________________ Susan, Pringle and Finn

We changed "Root Beer" to Gus when we got our little guy. It was pretty easy. we used his name and gave him a treat everytime he looked up when we said it. i think he probably thought Gus meant "here's a treat" but he figured it our eventually.
As for Finn, our first child is due in 6 weeks and he will be called Finn, so i kinda like that name. |

We got our second doodle when she was 1 year old. Her name had always been 'curly girl' because she was the curliest girl in the litter. I hated that name so we stewed on it a bit. I wanted to change it to something similar so as not to confuse her too much, like Carly...But my husband insisted that she looked like an old lady with her curly grey hari so we renamed her Madge. It was no big deal, she figured it out soon enough and we have never had any regrets.....Good Luck!

I kind of like "Grayden", and you could still keep Gray for short... _________________ Mike, Sofie, and Parker

Every one of my dogs has had a nickname. They know the real name, but eventually answer to many. A bit confusing? I kind of watch their personality. Maybe this is what you could do. I really do know what you mean when they act different than their name. It's hard to help choose on for you not knowing the dood but try different names that he looks and acts like and go from there. _________________ Linda & Bogart

I love Finn MacCool!!
I would probably begin to do as others have and sing his name...
and it would probably end up being Finney MacCool! in the song.

I like the name!
I, too, have many names and nicknames for my dogs...
Let's see...
Bayley, My Bay, Bay Area, BayBay, Little Bay
Lexie, Lex, Lexie Lou, Lexarina, Knock-it-off! (Okay, she thinks that's her name!)
Chase, Chasie, My Chasie Boy, The Chase Man, Big Daddy, Chase My Chase
Rosie, Rosarita Bean, Beanie, Rosie Bean, Bean
Nitos, (started out as "El Carnitos" for Mr. Pork 'cause he ate a lot), Nito Banito, Baby Boy, Baby Nitos
Madison, Maddy, Little Darlin', Maddie Girl
Dupree, Dupie, Dupe, Dupie Dupe, The French Pooodle' (said with a French accent) and, well, there is one that I can't print here.
Amelia Jane, Janie, Mia, Mia Jane, Mia Me, Go Lay Down!
Gerry, Gerry Girl, Ger Ger, My Baby Girl, Ger sweet Ger.
Sherwood, Sherwoodie, Woodie Wood, Sherwoodie Wood, "Dammit, Sherwood!"
And the puppies...all have a name, but most answer to "my babies!" or "Liddles!" or "where's my liddle?" or "I've got a treat!" and "widdow widdows!"
So, yes...you can change a name! _________________ jacque.bayley.lexie.chase.rosie.nitos.amelia.dupree.madison.sherwood.gerry www.backporchlabradoodles-jacque.blogspot.com www.backporchlabradoodles.com |
