Rehome labradoodle help!

Hi everyone,
Thought I'd start a new thread. We went to see 'Belle' last night. Her family says they don't have time to take care of her anymore. I'll give you a run down of what her owner said to us. He's not exactly sure how old she is, he thinks about 10-12 months. They got her when she was 8 weeks old from a breeder in Iowa. The breeder brought some puppies to Illinois to show his family and ended up selling one to the current owners. They were sold on looks and not work of a puppy. They currently have a 5 year old lab as well. She doesn't shed. She weighs about 45 pounds. She was just groomed and looks in good shape as far as weight. He tells she is housebroken and crate trained. He said she will occasionally chew on Barbie dolls or the like, but not all the time. She only barks when someone comes to the door. He said she has been socialized although she never attended puppy classes. She knows sit and hand shake. She has been spayed and up to date on all her shots. I have the name of the vet and kennel they have used and I know of them very well. They are highly recommended here. I plan on calling the vet today to get more information and to verify everything. The owner is not sure on pedigree or parents. He thinks he might have a paper but not sure. Belle has a curly soft coat that is truly beautiful. She was just groomed and had her nails clipped.

Okay, that is what we were told. They are willing to give her to us for free along with her crate. We told him we would talk it over and let him know today. Now, this seems too good to be true that a dog can be this perfect and they don't want to keep her. My husband heard the owners 5 year old say she pees in the house and this concerns us. I know 5 year olds can exaggerate and may have seen her pee a couple of times and is just commenting on that. Can a 10-12 month dog be housebroken if indeed she is not? We don't mind doing the housebreaking if it is going to work, but do we need to worry about any medical problems with the urinary tract that prevents her from getting completely housebroken?

I know I'm fishing, but I don't want to be too surprised. She was so cute and so good with us and the kids. She wagged her tail the entire time, let our 3 year old hug her,pet her and kiss her and she just sat there. She was very well behaved with us.

I emailed the owner and asked him again about the peeing and the pedigree papers. I'm waiting to hear back.

We just think she is everything we wanted (bigger than we hoped, but we're okay with that) and we think that maybe if it's too good that their might be a problem.

Thanks you guys. It nice to know that if Belle doesn't work out for us that their might be someone else out there to give her a good happy home. I'll keep you posted. I called the vet today and they said the owner has to call and give permission for the vet to disclose any information on the dog. I emailed the owner and am waiting to hear from the vet. Hi Kim! What exciting news! It's possible that the dog does still urinate in the house, and maybe that's why they want to find her a new home. But, you can house train a dog at any age! And the good thing about an older dog is that they have more bladder control! You would have to take her out every few hours instead of every 15 minutes with a puppy! I say go for it! Please keep us posted!

Good morning Kim,
I would advise you to do exactly what you have done...visit and check with the vet.
Since you visited and she seemed good with your children I would take a chance on her...unless you get a negative report from the vet.
I'd suggest that you get her in to your vet asap.
Good luck, sounds great...this little girl needs a loving home!

Okay,

I spoke with the vet today and he said 'Belle' is up to date on shots, spayed as of October. Had some housebreaking issues early on, but believes she is completely housebroken now. No medical problems. Healthy, and in shape. So the only thing left to see about is the papers, but I don't think that is going to matter much other than knowing where she came and who her parents are. I feel like I wasn't due to have a our first baby for another 2 months and all of the sudden I'm in labor!! She is on Iams food- do I keep her on that or do I switch? Thanks again everyone!

Sounds like you have done all the checking necessary, and you will be getting a great doodle! Can't wait to see pics. Iams is not the best food, but if you do switch, just do it slowly, gradually adding the new food. Congratulations.

Midnite is adorable. Let us know how it turns out! Shannon, what food would you suggest for Belle? The vet uses Science Diet, but I have no idea where to even start. I've read some back posts, but it seems like everyone has their own preference. I want to give her the best food I can. Thanks,

First, I have to ask. Is anyone else not getting the email notifications?? I have to go back and find posts to even answer. I would look for a food that does not have any corn in it. Look for a food that has meat or fish as the main ingredient. A lot of people have good luck nutro natural choice, or nutro ultra. That one is a holistic food, and seems to be good. Not sure if you have a costco by you, but people also feed their doodles kirkland chicken and rice, or lamb and rice. It is a good quality food for a lower price. Also, remeber that the first few days, Belle won't know which door to use to go potty, so you will have to show her the door you want her to use. Update!!!

We have decided to adopt Belle to our family! We will pick her up next Saturday! We needed a week to get the house in transition stage. I am nervous but excited. I will post pictures of her when we get her. Thanks everyone for all your support and advice. I will be asking more questions as the days go on!
