Anyone know anything about Irish Setter/ Poodle mixes? One turned up at a local shelter and I am so tempted.

yeah Kirby is half irish setter and half poodle. He has a lot of doodle characteristics, but is also different (he doesn't love water, he is more serious (could be his training though - he still has a very playful side though), he is very friendly and loves people and dogs.) If you have more questions feel free to PM me.

Are there any photos online of the dog? I would love to see another dog like Kirby Smile

Oh yeah - I posted new photos of Kirby on "stories about your doodle" yesterday (random saturday photos).

Wow, she looks like a labradoodle or goldendoodle to me! She sure is beautiful!

Good luck with what you decide!
Very Happy

I think she is just beautiful. Only problem is that Henry is 5 months old so it would be quite crazy around out house with 5 and 6 month doodles running around. I'm up for it but DH is not so sure. We almost adopted Henry's brother last week when he was suddenly being rehomed. Unfortunately they had given him to someone else before they knew we would take him. DH was ok with getting the second doodle when it was Henry's brother but isn't really sold on the whole idea of two dogs. I can't get there today to see her but am hoping maybe tomorrow. I did e-mail the shelter to be sure she is still available and to try to get more info. We'll see. I just think she and Henry would make such a great pair!

of course I think you should get her...she's so cute!!! If you are considering it, you should take Henry to meet her to make sure they get along. Just remember a dog will be scared in the shelter (she has lost her home) so it may not be her real personality.

Poor dog...I wonder if her previous family at least tried to find her a home before putting her in the shelter? Sad

update - DH just asked me if it would be a problem with having a male and female together. THat means he is thinking about it! Laughing
Henry is scheduled for his neuter the end of April and Molly would be spayed before we could bring her home so it shouldn't be a problem, right? I'd definately take Henry to meet her before making any decisions. If he doesn't like her, that would ber a deal breaker.

OK my breeder breeds both GD's and Irish Setter Poodles.
Kirby was a rehome which is how Leslie came to have him in her life. Very Happy

usually they're very intelligent doodles that don't steal socks hahaha but
they are leanly built, very nimble and extremely smart. OB training does wonders with them....they can deshred a toy in seconds though.

They also have stonger hunting instincts so a fenced in backyard is great as off leash in the country, their nose goes nuts with scent trails. They're also extremly happy doodles, energetic too but also very loving people oriented like Ld's and Gd's.
NOW my breeder used Field Irish Setters which tend to be smaller than the regular Show Irish setters we're used to seeing....so the doodle you're looking at may be a tad different in size, etc.

good luck and keep us posted

haha...your husband is caving Smile I have heard a male and female actually should be the best match as 2 dogs...of course it totally depends on their temperments Smile

About the spay/neuter...they are both so young that I don't think their hormones have had much a chance to get going yet. Even if they meet and aren't fixed I wouldn't think it would be a huge problem. Kirby wasn't fixed when we got him but he was older (13 months) and there wasn't a huge problem between him and Dex (other than him getting used to our home and them getting used to each other)...He did mellow out after we got him fixed though.

I think we are going to pass on her. I just talked to a woman from the shelter and she said there is no way I can have Henry meet her before making a commitment. I'm just not comfortable with that. Hopefully someone else has seen this post and is interested because she is just so adorable I can't hardly stand it. The good news is that DH was opening up to the idea of getting another so now I just have to find the right fit for us. Razz

I wonder why the shelter would say that! The dogs need to meet to make sure they get along. I think you are making the right decision and your new doodle will be in your home before you know it!!! Good luck in your search!

I find that very sad that they wouldn't be concerned enough about their doggies to make sure they are going to home where they will get along with another animal in the home - the point is to find them a good, loving, permanent home so they don't come back to shelter again Sad

hmmm...the link doesn't work anymore...maybe she found a home...I sure hope so, she is so cute!

I agree...I would never adopt an older dog w/o letting him/her meet a current dog.
