What happens to the pups that the pet stores do no sell?????????
Anyone know firsthand what the answer is.............

I don't know first hand, but I have tried to find out. I went to Pet Land right after they opened here in Wichita and acted like an interested puppy buyer. They assured me that all the puppies came from reputable breeders (yeah, right), yadayadayada. I asked what happens to the puppies that don't get sold and their reply was "Well, we hope we find loving homes for all our puppies". Very evasive answer I thought Evil or Very Mad

I think we all know what happens to those poor puppies that get too old to sell Crying or Very sad

I think they end up in shelters, but that is just my guess.

This is a very sad topic, I have been reading on it here in there for a while now. As a new breeder, how can I be assured that I am not selling one of my puppies to a broker? I was very blessed on my last litter, they all went to VERY good homes. I get email updates quite often. Can I put someting in my contract about this, if so what?

Because I was adding a couple of dogs to my crew, I felt I'd best find out what the law is here in terms of how many I could have and at what point I'd need to get licensed or registered as a kennel with USDA. I was actually quite shocked at what I learned. It's no wonder those millers get by with what they do!

In Wisconsin I can have up to 8 breeding dogs before I register as long as I'm just selling to the public directly. I can sell up to 60 pups a yr with no concern about answering to anyone about the type of care I give or life I provide for them. That's a LOT of pups!

There's no one in my area to even investigate reports of abuse or neglect other than the local police so naturally it's not going to be a big priority to them. I've spoken with our local Humane Society and they have no jurisdiction at all to help other than re-homing strays or surrenders. It's very disheartening. What few laws we have are so vaguely worded that it's very hard to get a conviction even if they do act.

Our local Petland only pays between $50-100 for these puppies they sell for up to $2000 a piece, so unfortunately they consider it a "cost of doing business".

pet stores bring their dogs in that didn't sell quick enough?
....I would think they would keep records of where, who how
the dog got to their shelter.

This is why so many breeders now spay/neuter their pups before they leave. That is about the only for sure way you would know that your puppy is not going to a puppymill.

When I first started breeding, I thought I needed to be licensed by state and USDA, so I did. I advertised being licensed by State and USDA on my website, thinking this was the right thing to do. WELL, I found out really quick (by a breeder that frequents these forums that was wanting to blackball me) that the only reason you would be licensed by USDA would be if you were selling to a broker or pet shop. I was horrified and immediately cancelled my license with USDA, I didn't want to be associated with them in the least. So, Tink, you might rethink being licensed with USDA.

Oh Di, I have no intention of connecting with them. I simply wanted to do my research before I got in too deep and was required to! LOL

I have a neighbor who is just a real pill who would love nothing more than to cause me legal issues, so I am very careful to abide by the laws regardless what I'm doing. I have no intention of selling that many pups, having that many breeders or selling to anyone but private parties.

I was truly surprised that you can have that many dogs before you're required to be licensed. I really had no idea till I checked into it. For me this is absolutely a hobby that I enjoy.

In NY State if you have 4 dogs you have to be kennel licensed

and like Di said , dogs that dont' sell or get too old ...well it's not good.

TINK you can put in a clause that a puppy has to be returned to you in the event that the people are unable to keep the pupy and NOT be given to a shelter.
