Soft coated wheaten terrior vs. labradoodles

I'm still looking for a puppy! I'm told that wheaten terriors are non-low shed, hypo-allergenic, active, not too dominant dogs also with great temperments. Anyone have experience and can compare and contrast? Anyone know reputable wheaten terrior breeders in the NY area. I spoke to one on Long Island, called Sportsman's Kennel where the parents of some of the pups are on premises and I'm going to look at a female that is 4 months old (born 9/9). Anyone have experience with this breeder? They've been in business for 40+ years and are state licensed. When's the optimal time to take a new pup home? They release dogs at 3 months. Should I be concerned that this one is still unsold? They don't spay ahead of time like many aust. labradoodle breeders do. They recommend de-sexing at 6 months at my own expense. Can anyone recommend reputable labradoodle breeders in the NYC area including LI? I'm looking for a no-low shed one so I guess an F1B is my best bet if I don't want to fork over $2,500 for a mulit-generation aust. doodle.

I wish i could help you decide...but i have 2 f1 Goldendoodles that don't shed and f1 labradoodle

the older puppies are great to get!!! a 12week is a great age!!!
but so are younger puppies, this is where the breeder can help you out
and neutering at 6mos is great too. but that is just my opinion

I didn't spend $2500 nor could I, then again i didn't get an australian doodle either

by the way, I got Max at 13 wks old and Beau at 15 wks old
peanut was 9 wks old
i'd take older puppies all day long Very Happy

I don't know of a wheaten terrier breeder in your area but I do know of a wonderful Labradoodle breeder in Rochester, she bought several of my dogs when I had to quit due to health. Her name is Beth and she is with Lakeview Doodles. If you are interested in her contact info, please PM me and I will get it to you.

I don't know the wheaten terrier well but have heard that they sometimes have behavioral problems - especially if they are left alone a lot. My only experience with them is two different people I know who both have behavioral problems with their dogs. One actually had to get a behavior specialist to work with her dog because her dog was so depressed. I can't remember what the other dog's issue was. I considered one prior to getting a labradoodle but with very young kids I wanted a dog that would be good with them and the labradoodle seemed to be a better fit. I'm sure a good breeder could give you some better insight on this. Overall, I think it depends on the owner and how much time they can give to their dog.

I just saw lakeview's F1's and I say go for the doodle and not the Wheaten!

My Mom has a wheaten and I think you'll be happier with a doodle!

Just my opinion....but I am sure others would agree!!! Laughing

If you really want an austrailian labradoodle but not the $2500 price tag, you could think of guardianship. I considered it but then couldn't get my husband on board with the idea. Basically you are the guardian to a pick of the litter, healthy breeding dog. The breeder breeds the dog for x number of litters, then has it fixed and it's yours forever. There is info on this site if you do a search. I ended up with an F1 and couldn't be happier.

do a Pro Con list of what you're looking for in a dog on a piece of paper
sometimes that helps you see better and go from there

Hi AnnMarie, I sent you a PM. You should visit with Beth sometime, she's a great gal. She also has 1 or 2 Doodle Romps a year, I'm sure she'd love to have you come. She just e-mailed me and she has just bred Niki with Sonny, 2 dogs she bought from me. They should be GORGEOUS puppies.

I, too, thought about a Wheaton before getting a LD. But after I started researching the breed, I decided that the LD was the right breed for my family. Wheatons are terriors...and with terriors come terrior traits.

You might want to look into the different lines of Soft Coated Wheatons. I know that Beverley Mannors used Irish lines only when she used them with her labradoodles. I know the cross is controversial, so I'm not trying to pull politics in this thread. But, if you're seriously considering the two, you should consider all the possibilities, and I wanted to throw that one out.

I don't really know the difference between the two. I did meet one when I had Napa at the Vet, and he was quite a bit bigger than Napa. But I think Napa's on the small side. He's 31.2 lbs, and probably between 15 and 17 inches, tall.

Best of luck with your decision. But, probably the best way to decide what is best for your family is to make a pros and cons list, and see if you can find anyone with the types of pups your interested in who are willing to let you meet their dog(s).

i know you've been looking since at least the beginning of Nov 2007
and it isn't an easy decision....i know of some people looking for OVER a year to find the type of dog they think would fit well into their homes and hearts

now i dont' remember but do Wheaton's shed? cause if i recall correctly your hubby doesn't want a shedding dog

remember all dogs as puppies will test your patience and humor.

have you gone to the library and gotten out a book on dog breeds
while having yourhubby sit down next to you
then draw up a list of the dog breeds you think would be compatible
next try to call and/or visit breeders or places with these kinds of dogs

it's one thing to look at pictures its another to see them

lastly, i'd love to keep answering your questions but in reality
it's not clear cut answers all the time........i sure hope you and your family find the right kind of dog for you and your family lifestyle
another thing to consider: couch potatoe, moderate exercise, or high energy dog?

Doodles: labradoodles are cute, loving, comical but they're also intelligent and soem chew, some don't, some nip , some dont'
the also cannot be left outside in a doghouse as they are PEOPLE oriented dogs and not as independent say as German Shepard or Chow or Bouvier.

the more intelligent the dog , the more they can outsmart you at times hahhahaaa (was thinking of my 3 doodles)

TEMPERAMENT IS KEY!!! then look at health tests on parents, color, coat etc
ALSO ENROLL in puppy training classes!! can make a BIG difference in managing to get thru puppyhood....as you may miss sleep, have a carpet pee and poooped on, a chair could get chewed, and the list goes on

Choosing a breeder isn't easy........go by yoru gut and the info you receive ....aslo talk and/or visit them.

it's like having a kid again...............remember this is just my out loud thoughts only
