Hi
I am new to this forum and new to the world of labradoodles! We are getting a new puppy in a couple of weeks. She is an apricot F1B labradoodle. We have not had one of these dogs before, and it's been quite a while since we have had a new puppy, so any advice you can offer will be appreciated.
Thanks |

Well, Woody is HOME! Another 300 mile round trip today to bring him back to our place and he was soooooooo good in the car - he only weed once.
Having trouble getting him to try out his crate. His bedding from his bros and sis are in there and it all looks very comfy but he won't go in there of his own accord. I don't want to pick him up and plonk him inside as that goes against everything I've been told. Any ideas?
It's wonderful to finally have him. He is gorgeous, so affectionate. We are one lucky couple. |

Just have to say how happy I am that Woody is home. you have a real cutie there..
My only idea would be to maybe put a soft toy or a blankie in the cage with him, and see if that makes it easier. Mine have all loved their crates, and once they get used to it they all seem to love em. Can't wait to see updated pictures.. _________________ Shannon - Phantom, Star, Fozzie & Roni

Hi Nick
Congrats on getting Woody home. We get ours this weekend. (Can't wait). Fortunately for us, she is only a 5 minute car ride away! Hadn't heard you weren't to put them in the crate. Can you fill me in on the reasoning behind that?
Thanks, and enjoy your new pup. |

Ah well. It's been a big day for him - I guess he'll go in when he's good and ready. Thanks for the tips!
I have to go off in a minute to play guitar in a local bar and my wife Brigid will be left with him - I'm kind of jealous.
I'm going to sleep downstairs tonight so if he whimpers I'll be able to call out to him.
It's been such a long process finding him, I can't tell you how happy we are.
Good luck with yours Jannie!

I always put mine in the crate just by putting them in. They would cry for a few minutes, but once they realized you were coming back they seemed fine.. _________________ Shannon - Phantom, Star, Fozzie & Roni

Well how about that - he's in and fast asleep!
You were right, Shannon - he's going to be a big beautiful thing. |

Great news there.. Funny how you think you may scar them for life by doing certain things. Puppies forgive quite quickly, and they are such little lovers. Sometimes, those faces make it hard to say no. _________________ Shannon - Phantom, Star, Fozzie & Roni

Since our pups are only 8 weeks old (Dec 1) our experience is pretty recent. The first week to 10 days they are helpless and we were worried that our cats might see them as food, so we kept them in a room where the cats couldn't get to them.
After their eyes open they become brand new. Their faces look so different, and they start to recognize familiar things around them.
It seems like after week 3, they change overnight. The pen that once held them securely has to be modified, and a few days later, modified again. One of ours is an escape artist who is perfectly happy exploring his new environment. Don't think that wire pens are always the answer because some of ours can climb them. One of our pups climbs the chain link fence next to his kennel so that he can perch on top of the kennel and get a better view. (this started at seven weeks).
Every day they become more dependepent on their people, and by week 4, mom has stopped feeding them. They make a special screeching sound when they are hungry and it calls mom to them until she cuts them off. After that, they make the sound for you.
We started supplementing at week 3 by soaking puppy food until it was soft and then breaking it up with a hand blender. We fed 5 at a time in the bathtub for easy cleanup. They quickly progressed to harder food, and we found that adding too much water gave them the runs. Now we put down dry food that has been slightly moistened and they go at it like sharks in a feeding frenzy. We make sure that they have plenty of water to drink and they do well.
The change from helpless infant to household terror takes less time than you think. Last night one of our helpless babes bit the cat. It was just a puppy nip that we corrected but the predatory cycle has made a complete revolution. |
