we have always had 2 crates for our doodles when puppies so we hated lugging them up at night and down by day.
Max sleeps with us most of the time in our bed and we wake up with him at the foot of bed or on his doggy bed on the floor
Peanut started sleepin in our bedroom at around age 11mos
Beau HAS to sleep in his crate or NO ONE gets any sleep hahahaha
he's 5mos right now
NOW one thing i will say is that as LONG as you dog knows you're the pack leader then there shouldn't be any issues later on.
When max started obedience training he WANTED to sleep in his crate for 2.5mos THEN later on he started coming back up to the bedroom _________________ Annmarie, Max,& Peanut

So, do you have a Double King bed? _________________

Regarding Cesar Millan:
Nancy, please forgive me for what I'm about to post. You're obviously a big fan of Cesar Millan, so I don't want to step on your toes here. While his methods may work for some, I think it's only fair to let others know that his methods are not without controversy.
Here's an article that ran in the San Francisco Chronicle that is critical of Cesar Millan's methods: The Anti-Cesar Millan
Here's an article written by the director of the San Fransico SPCA. There are many links at the bottom of the page regarding Cesar: Urban Dawgs
Ian Dunbar's book focus a great deal on crate training. He is the founder of the Association of Pet Dog Trainers. _________________ Lori & Baxter

I'm the worst to give crating advice as we never got Dexter crate trained...however I can definitely see the benefits of having 2 in different areas of the house.
Regarding the bedroom - we made Dex earn it and didn't give him the privledge of sleeping with us until he was potty trained and somewhat behaved (around 6-7 mos). We swore he would sleep on the floor, but now he's up in bed with us and Kirby sleeps on our floor. It works out well for us. _________________ Leslie M |

Csears methods have worked well for me,
i was using them well before i even knew he existed, jealousy goes a ways with people for many reasons,, wheither it be csear millian or anyone else, there is always going to be someone to speak negative of someone that is utilizing his or her knowledge and making a good of it
if he was that bad he wouldnt be doing as well for himself and training dogs that would otherwise be given up on _________________ Nancy at Doodlesville(Virginia)

Good point Nancy, I wasn't trying to discount your success with his methods. I just wanted to present the other side of the issue. Since there are so many dogs, each with their own unique personalites - it seems wise to have multiple approaches in one's "bag of tricks" when it comes to dog training.

True,. however with the points brought out in this theard i can see the potential for a disaster, dogs are like children they have to be taught and protected from themselves, if not anything can happen at any point, and it only takes one time ,,,why not protect them all the time, and not let that oppurtunity arise _________________ Nancy at Doodlesville(Virginia)

So Nancy, i am tired tonight but also trying to see where this is going
are you saying NEVER let a dog sleep in your room unless it's in a crate?
i use alot of common sense with my doodles
Max from day1 never left the bed or bedroom unless i did
peanut still has to be crated at nighttime on and off
Beau at 5mos welll he's a bit of an adventurer at at tiems so off to his crate he goes _________________ Annmarie, Max,& Peanut

if the point is to keep them protected from themselves,
why not advocate the use of multiple crates throughout the house?

Nancy while i understand your point of the xpen crating well
we all know how that worked out with Peanut at 9 wks old
2. not everyone has room for both the xpen and crate attachment
3. IF a dog learns who the Alpha is , then sleeping in the bedroom and/or in a crate in the bedroom at night shouldn't pose a problem
we have all 3 crates by our dining room and door but there's always one crate and doggy bed left in our bedroom too.
so I am wondering what is the real harm in having a crate in a bedroom and/or letting a dog sleep on the end ofyour bed?
For me, Max was able to alert me when a Bat was trying to get in my bedroom one night _________________ Annmarie, Max,& Peanut

LMAO, k,,here goes when a puppy attempts to climb out of the expen, its time to frantically work on the crate training, which should have been started well before the climb out started,, to do this,,when home, close pup in crate, as long as isnt crying open door of crate, after a few minutes,,do this multiple times during the day, just a few minutes at a time, if not crying open up door, repeat, a little while later, continue this thru about a weeks time should be completely crate trained, and wont need the expen , the expen is not in place of house training it is in aide of, also like a baby playpen, i dont know anyone that would let a 2yr old child run of house unsupervised, the dangers are just as great if not greater with a puppy, IMHO
as far as a dog sleeping in the bed, im against that, That is NOT being a pack leader, also not only can they fall out and injure themselves ..jumping on and off a bed can injure bones and joints during thier growing times,
not to mention the bed is my space ,,my dogs have their own space,
the furniture is my space,,not theirs, my dogs have lots of time enjoying lots of things that do not have the potential of injury or problems later, Im the boss,, ok Steve is the Boss of them,, but they are perfectly happy and i can trust them, because they have been taught properly from the get go
i would never allow a younger pup or young dog run of the house, too much they can get in trouble with that can be potentially fatal _________________ Nancy at Doodlesville(Virginia)

remember Nancy peanut did this on her 3rd day while i sitting next to her and will say this: Peanut was crated trained in 1.5hours
Beau got crated trained in minutes...........Max took months but he also never jumped off or on a bed nor are any of them allowed on bed unless its by invitation only
NOW people with multiple dogs i can see the no bed rule.
you've given good info as YES none of us would leave a 2year alone nor would we leave a small puppy alone _________________ Annmarie, Max,& Peanut
