Why "Penny Postcards"?
These postcards cost 1¢ to mail. Postage was temporarily raised to 2¢ from 1917 to 1919 to cover the cost of World War I & from 2925 to 1928 (not sure the reason for the latter).

Are They For Sale?
All of the cards shown on this site are in the hands of private collectors. They are shown for your enjoyment. None are for sale. You can find many old postcards available for sale elsewhere on the Internet.

Here is a postcard of Lake Erie where i lived for 10years...it still looks the same except the Beach is narrower now

AND this truly amazed me as when I grew up in NC once a week we went to town and this is EXACTLY how it looked in the 1960's ....it is still quite similar. hahhaha when i was young this was considered a BIG city as we lived on a 2 x 5 7 mi island with a pop. of 700

HERE is CAPE LOOKOUT ...my grandaddy actually lived at the house next to the lighthouse,
my family ran the lighthouse for 3 generations Very Happy

Penny postcards are AWESOME!!
Paul and I collect a bunch---most with Native American subjects though...

they are VERY collectible...
and some postcards can fetch into the hundreds and thousands of dollars...

Even back then, in 1900, postcards were collectible--even if you hadn't visited the place....people had "postcard albums" where they could display their cards, ones they had purchased, as well as those friends would send---it was VERY fashionable and it was a VERY social thing to do....

in many ways, postcards then are what vacation photos are today...evidence you went somewhere!! LOL!!

ok, sessa's art or social pop history lesson is over....sorry for the rambling...as you can tell---I LOVE history!! Wink

p.s. the second rate increase in the late 1920s was probably due to the Depression . Wink
