As fellow dog lovers and some breeders, what do you guys think about the Ellen Degeneres story?
I really feel bad for the kids who got hurt in the middle of this, but I also understand that most breeders and adoption agencies have contracts for a reason.
Just wondering what you guys think... _________________ Katie, Uma, and Juno |

From what I've read...Ellen adopted a puppy, but things didn't work out between the puppy and her cats. She spent nearly $3000 having a trainer try to make things better, but it just wasn't going to work. She then gave the puppy to a friend of hers who is married with 2 children, ages 10 and 12. The new family bonded with the dog. When the adoption agency got wind that Ellen had given the puppy away they removed the puppy from the family because in the adoption contract, Ellen agreed to return the puppy if he didn't work out for any reason. The agency is now refusing to give the puppy back to the family because it doesn't let families with children under 14 to adopt pets. Everyone is now upset...most of all the family who lost their dog. _________________ Katie, Uma, and Juno |

IMO if the puppy was getting along wonderfully with the new family, adjusting well , happy, well fed, trained, and the family could show the agency their home, kids and puppy interacting with love...then let the family have the puppy.
now black and white: Ellen broke her contract and should have
1. returned puppy
2.notified the agency what her intentions were so the agency could have interviewd the family and POSSIBLY bent the rules?
so i say leave the puppy but the law states the puppy was to go back to the agency.
catch 22 situation _________________ Annmarie, Max,& Peanut

It seems that Ellen realizes that she went about it wrong. She was sooooo upset on her show, she was totally sobbing. To me, she sounds very genuine and recognizes that she made a mistake. From what I've read it also sounds like the rescue organization was not consistant with their policies too. Ellen claims that she had the puppy for a month and his microchip was not updated with her name as they said it would be, which is why they can take the puppy away. They should have given that family a chance and observed them with the dog and then decided if it would be ok for them to keep him. _________________ Erika, Marley & Oski...My house will forever be littered with socks! |

Apparently the agency wasn't quite on the up and up and had not changed the microchip to indicate that Ellen was the dog's owner. That is why the police had to let the agency take the dog ... the chip stated the dog was the agency's!
I also wonder if there was an ulterior motive ... if perhaps the agency was hoping for more $$ from someone! Yes, Ellen broke the contract, however inadvertently, but why couldn't the agency do an evaluation of the home and determine the dog was in a good setting? Isn't that what it's all about? _________________ Mary and Ebbe,

I think the puppy should stay with the family. Obviously Ellen loved the puppy and did what a responsible dog owner should do if they can't keep a pet. She found him a great home. I understand there was a contract but if the puppy was living in a good situation with a family that loves him whats the difference?
And what kind of agency doesn't allow pups to go to familes with kids under 14??? I could see in the children were toddlers but 10 and 12? _________________ Heather, Morgan, Maya, and Sadie

I hate to be a grinch about the whole thing, but I think it's all about publicity and I think both parties are getting the publicity they sought . . . Therefore, I defer opinion, other than bah humbug on them both. _________________ Diane (and Dakota)

I think the puppy should have been allowed to stay with the new family. It is all about finding a loving home for the animal. So what if the rules were broken. I doubt it was intentional. And now the poor dog is in a cage somewhere wondering what it did wrong. I bet that agency doesn't get a dime from anyone in the future which is so sad for all the animals awaiting placement. |

I actually applaud the publicity cause I bet ya
that agency has lots of people trying to adopt now that they
know that Ellen did previously.
The bottom line on that story is rules are rules for a reason
and in my heart I would give the family the dog, but they are ruling
by their cannot break the rules clause, so both lose for now.
Hope the person that ends up with the dog does so because they really
want the dog and not that they want a dog that Ellen had and lost _________________ Sue & Denver

personally i think that too many "RESCUE" people and places think their poop dont stink,,
they have lost sight of the true reason for helping animals ,Its more about Control, Wholier then thou type of attitude
I have recently seen this first hand!!!
I used to do rescue,,it is alot of work, but you dont do what these folks did in this type of situation You evaluate each and every home and situation as differently as you do the animals,
Just unbelievable and tottally a true testament to the mental state of some of these rescue people _________________ Nancy at Doodlesville(Virginia)

There is video footage on the web of the woman from the rescue organization when she went to the house to "evaluate" the situation. Apparently after much begging by Ellen (according to Ellen) she agreed to go to the house to evaluate the situation. When she got there she picked him up and refused to put him down, she called the police and animal control and then for 3 hours she was there holding him waiting for them to come. The younger daughter had to taken somewhere she was in hysterics and the older one just kept pleading. She wouldn't put him down for a drink, or to potty or anything. Once the authorities came and the scan showed they were still the owner and not Ellen, they could do nothing but let her take the puppy. It seems so traumatic and completly unprofessional.
When we made the decision to get a dog, I browsed petfinder.com for hours and hours because although I wished to get a doodle, it was cost prohibitive for us and we felt getting a rescue was a good thing to do. Except so many of them don't allow families with young children (our youngest was 1 yr at the time) adopt and then also there are so many with special needs or behavior issues that we were just not equipped or willing to take on. It's hearbreaking that these animals are without homes, but it is difficult for families to adopt rescues.
It was such a stroke of luck to have met Marley's previous owners who needed to re-home her! _________________ Erika, Marley & Oski...My house will forever be littered with socks! |

I have to agree with Diane.
And for the sake of being polite, I won't comment much further.
However, I do feel compelled to say one thing:
Just because you have your own t.v show doesn't mean you are any different from the rest of us, let alone, are you above the law. (despite actions to the contrary )
Ellen EXPECTED "different" treatment from the rescue people---evident from both the beginning through to the end.
The rescue people EXPECTED a "different" outcome from this as well, both from the beginning through to the end.
Again to echo Diane---"bah humbug on them both."
The real victims here were the family and the pup.
All were misled.
Too bad.

True,,but did you realize that it came out that they had gone over to "evaluate the family" the rescue person held the pup the entire time while the little children were crying would NOT let thepup down to get water or pee, reported close to 3hrs, the children were crying upset, beggin her , she never intended on evaluating this family,,her intentions were to get the pup back, why i cant fathom, other then to hurt Ellen or make a point,,again its all about CONTROL with some of these people,,
Im appaulled at the way this entire thing was handled, wheither you like ellen or not the rescue is the one that is the one at fault here, on how they handled this, no excuse none
I truly feel like they expected to use this to get something out of Ellen, seems it backfired on them,,i sure hope so
the family had 2 small children, the pup was in a safe place, it was already spayed, so no worries about it being bred, they werent going to dump it anywhere, the children adored that pup,,
i can just see those poor kids beggin that evil woman to put down their puppy,,im so mad about this i could scream,, i did rescue, i know what they do, but in the long run,,wouldnt the pups welfare be the Number one priority,,NOT CONTROL, or monetary gain, ( i know nothing has been mentioned about a lawsuit ,,but you can bet with ellens money its coming) _________________ Nancy at Doodlesville(Virginia)
