Doodles & Water?

doodles also have that second eyelid that poodles and labs have to help protect their eyes in the water. So yeah.... they are water dogs!

Looks like fun, and such nice, clean-looking water! I wouldn't be as concerned if my river looked like that, but the banks are muddy and the water's tea-colored from tannic acid due to all the oak in the Pine Barrens. I'll just keep my fingers crossed that my pup's more like AnnMarie's and try training if she's not!

Interesting about the poodle background and the eyelids!

I have a 4.5 month old doodle and if the water bowl is large she will do the dog paddle in it, plus she has a tendency to curl around her water bowl with her tail or tip of her ear in the water! She drinks from the hose, runs through the sprinklers and will submerge her head in the tub when taking a bath so do you think SHE loves water Shocked

I haven't taken her to the lake yet or near a pool, but I imagine she will be in water heaven!!

LESLIE..guess what? our banks are muddy, the bottom is silty for the 1st 4 ft and well the water isn't clear hahhaha but Max is black so he doesn't show dirt at all...Peanut on the other hand is cream colored with tinge of apricot but she's too scared of the creek so far. She'd rather walk thru muddy trails Rolling Eyes

We discovered that Sandy LOVES the water... He intently watched the girls jumping in my parents pool on Saturday and after one of their jumps, he followed! I know I probably shouldn't let him swim yet but he was in the water for a whopping 20 seconds (the first time) and 2-3 minutes the second. The second time we wanted to see if he could swim (with someone hovering over him) just in case he did it again. He started out thrashing around a bit and "got it" within about 20 seconds.

No, I don't plan on allowing him to swim in the pool again - once was enough for my heart. After the pool cover incident and the dollar signs rolling around my head, the thought of him tearing the pool liner shoots my blood pressure up into dangerous levels!

edit: and yes, I have pictures! I just don't want to overwhelm everyone with too many pictures in a weekend!

Well, we'll just have to hope for the best and cope with it if it happens. We also belong to a sailing club and spend a lot of time there in the summer, mostly for the beach for our granddaughter, but my husband has a Sunfish and a GP14. We've taken our other dogs there and they love it. Plus it has a sandy bottom so it's not such a hassle. Maybe my pup can get her water fix there.

How do wet dogs and leather seats mix, though? The back of my wagon is usually already full with sailing gear and beach chairs!

personally I dont think dogs and leather car seats mix at all.
they scratch them and poke holes.
thank goodness our big car doesnt have leather Smile

my car is leather and I have gobs of blankets and towels in it.
trystan went on an excursion the other week through a creek and I took
my car out to go find him (his collar batterys went dead and the rabbits were
to inviting!) anyway there was no way I was putting him in my car so I
hung the leash out of the car with him hooked to it and went real slow!!
all was good until we past the chickens in the road Smile

OK my landcruiser has leather seats so what i do is this: i bought the fake sheepskin pad that has a rubber backing at a petshop. It cost $30 and can be washed and/or cut to size. I lay it on the seat then put my doodles in harnesses and wahhlaaa Leather stays clean and no holes either.
OH the pad is 30in by 60 in so it fits great on the whole length of the back and/or 3 seats

Another idea i did when i had cloth seats was to buy a twin size velvety blanket and cut holes for the seat belt thingys and seats stayed clean.

Lastly, if its a short drive I use my old Subaru instead since it has cloth seats but not as much room as my SUV

We have a rill in our backyard. Even with the underground fence if a duck lands in that water Archie is after him. We put out the warning call "Ducks in the Rill" so we're all prepared. I'm afraid he's going to catch one of the ducklings. Its gooshy muddy on the bottom so he's got to be hosed off when he gets out. We're working on training him to stop at the bank but it doesn't always work. Last week he got out on the otherside and wouldn't go back in to come to us. One of us stayed there and watched him and the other had to walk to find a place where we could cross...in the rain. We're working on getting him to stop at the banks...we tried a baby pool and he just drank out of it. I think the ducks might be too enticing!

hey, this is such a cool THREAD! And....it's sort of about "OUR" puppy so I thought I should read it all.

So far, Leslie's little "Chou" doesn't seem enamored with the wading pool we have in the yard. His sister "Sidekick" LOVES it!

But I have a different question for you all....what, if any, do you all have to battle giardia, with all the natural water and silt, etc?

And does Pumpkin fight it, or mixed with yogurt are you ok?

No it does not fight it as far as curing it. It might help the syptoms but I would think that is it. Meds from the Vet will cure it. As far as the water any water left standing that gets dirty can potentailly be an enemy. Hope that helps.
