I contacted our local "Face Low Cost Spay Neuter Clinic" to inquire about having Murphy Neutered. I called early understanding that the neutering should be done at 6 months, and with them being very busy I wanted to get this scheduled. I was surprised to hear that they are doing them as early as 4 months. They asked me another question I found very intersting "Does he have his adult teeth yet"? Not to sound dumb about this but what do the "boys" down there have to do with teeth? Also is there a problem with having "the proceedure" (as we call it when Murphy is present) done at 5 months?

Hi Jamie...you are not sounding stupid...I think that some vets believe that if the male dog has adult teeth, his testicles have dropped...so then they can neuter him.
I have all of my puppies spayed and neutered before they go to their new home...they have the surgery at 8 weeks of age. I think that it can be done as early as 7 weeks. Many people frown on this, and many swear by it. As with most dog issues, it is a matter of doing research and making a decision that you believe to be right, given everything that you know.

I go ahead and get him done as soon as they can get him in. My Vet will do them as early as 4 months but I did have to do my Multi's at 7 weeks it was a little scary for me to take them and leave them but they are doing great.

Hahahaha coctail and steak! True!!

Good idea to go to the clinic. It really does not take a lot...I had all 4 of my male litter in for the operation at 9:30 and it was done in just a couple of hours. The recovery was good...but I must admit that my vet doesn't do a very "clean" cut...they looked weird.

Linda, I didn't know that you had the multi's done...it is horrible to think about, isn't it? It is one of the hardest things for me to do...but I feel good about the decision to do it.

My contract with the stud owner says I have to spay/neuter any pet quality sold. They did bounce back fast like nothing was done but I stilled worried. Any dog or puppy you put under you take a chance but when they are so little you worry a little more. But I do believe in spay/neuter for people who have no intentions of breeding things happen very fast even when you think they won't. Shocked

My vet wouldn't neuter until 5 months. The very day of his five month birthday he was neutered. Happy birthday, Dakota! Wink

He did just fine even though he still had his puppy canines. The last dog I inherited was an alpha male intact dog and I don't ever want to go through that again.

I was asked the same teeth question when I inquired about it. My vet told me that they like to wait until 6 months of age so they can pull the rest of the baby teeth at the same time as the neutering. So he will only need to be put under one time.

In one of the posts someone refered to "testicle sympathy". I love that phrase.
Chester was becoming ummm...uhhhh...expressive let's just say. So we had it done at about 5 months. No problems.
I'm glad someone explained the teeth thing---I couldn't figure it out seeing at there are on totally opposite ends!

The neutering surgery is easier for the male than female dogs. Our vet would not do Sadie until she was 6 months old. She was itchy and sore for several days and had to wear a cone around her head until the stitches were removed after 10 days. We had to give her medication for the pain and topical cream for the itching.

Cost me $250 by the way - no steak or cocktail included!
