WHO TESTS and WHICH KINDS ??

JAC I believe it is the same test and here's a good link for all to read and click on each disorder link listed......
it provides great info and tells if it's DNA testable or not, which breeds are more prone, what signs are noticeable and why not to breed a particular dog and so on.

How do they do the Pennhip test? Is it performed differently than OFA? AHHH So much to learn so much to learn! Confused

pennhip is not a test easily explained and i spent over a month researching it hahhaaaaaaaaaaaaa and then another 3 weeks after i did it on Beau.
you need to read up on it before you'd understand an answer to your question, seriously.

it took me a long time to understand the differences as i poured over proabably 100 articles......i am not joking, i read everything on both i could before doing a hip test, i also looked at so many xrays(online) as well.
the Searches weren't easy and took a long time.
I even called a few breeders ...2 in the US and 1 in canada.
and consulted with 4 vets too.

just to find PennHip.org took a bit of time along with calling different pennhip testing centers etc....so these links are a great way to start
then do more internet searches and you'll find many articles
which when you do really teaches more than anyone could type in here right now

I wish I would have had this forum when I first started breeding, there is just about everything you need to know here.

Good point to bring up on OFA Jac, for instance, when I first started breeding back in '03 and '04, I OFA'd my females at 6 mos mainly so I would know which ones to keep back for my breeding program and which ones I needed to place in pet homes. I had a beautiful female that had OFA'd with an excellent rating (her momma was also OFA excellent), I bred her on her 2nd heat and she had beautiful puppies and was a wonderful mother. I then had her OFA certification done after 2 years of age and she was OFA fair (she may of even been borderline, I can't remember), but she was immediately spayed and placed into a wonderful home in Colorado. I just couldn't believe the big difference in the testing. So, you new breeders coming up, please take to heart everything that you learn on this forum. There is so much knowledge here and breeders that have been there, done that. Good luck to you all and I think it is wonderful that you guys are doing your homework before jumping in to the breeding world.

This has always been my biggest concern...the OFA prelims are relied upon as a "fact" when if that were true, there would be no point to call it a "prelim". When people use that score to breed, they really should follow up with the final test at 2 years of age.
You acted appropriately and made a very hard decision...you have a lot of class...I admire that.

We KNEW he was a healthy and beautiful boy!
Our DNA testing came back too, and I am pleased to report that all of our seven dogs tested were clear from disease...not a carrier in the bunch!
Please PM me with Beau's coloring results...I'd like to put them into the matrix with some of my girls and see what we get! Very Happy

My regular vet does cardiac and eyes, and I'm in the process of getting the DNA testing done on Chip (my poodle stud) Bella and Hickory, my Lab dams. I'm not planning to breed Canada again, so won't do her.

As for OFA, that won't be done until I know that they've each passed the DNA screening.

So how about some opinions on Bella... as I've said before, Bella was hit by a car and given no vet treatment for it; several months before I got her. It was her pelvic/hip area that she fractured. By the time I got her, it was too late to repair the problem and othr than an odd gait on her right rear side she does fine. My vet says due to this he's not convinced it's worth trying to x-ray her for OFA since the fracture might make it hard to get an accurate reading and with her decreased mobility from the odd way it healed, the x-ray position could be painful and even damaging to her.

So should I still try to get it done? She's turned out so nice other than her odd gait that I hate not to breed her, so am leaning toward continuing to sell her pups at a lower price and still offer the 2 yr hip guarantee with an explanation as to why she's not been OFA'ed.

So what to do?

Tink I know another breeder who had a beautiful dog hit by a car, and his hips got so bad that the vet recommended against breeding him, even tho his gait/injuries were caused by car.

Arthritis? carrying the puppies in utero stressing her joints? delivery issues?

These are all questions I'd have. I sure understand the temptation tho. But I think if it affects your reputation that is far more expensive than losing Bella's future puppies

That's my girl Sheba- our first St. Poodle and her runty boy. He was 3wks old, and it was January but I was trying to use a sunny day to take some outdoor shots. Know how some cameras have a delay? I snapped the picture of the puppy, but when I saw what was saved, Sweet Sheba was right there checking on her baby!

** oh, that runty boy? Ended up 27" tall and 85lbs as an F1b!**

That photo is a watermark on my business cards since it was our first f1b litter and a sweet memory. Very Happy

I have paid for a logo that I love, but that shot is a sentimental fave.

Wow, Tink, this is a tough one...but I agree with Maureen.

I respect your decision to test your dogs...and commend you for moving in that direction. I am sorry that you are facing one of the toughest questions related to testing, so early on...

You are in a moral dilemma, for sure...but I have to say that I would not breed her. I would worry about her health during pregnancy and delivery.

After losing your sweet Poodle, such a fate for Bella or her puppies would be more than you could bear...I sincerely regret that you have to decide something like...that is never easy.

I'll give this a bump since there are a few new members thinking of becoming breeders.

We just got Hershey's Hip and Elbow x-ray results (that took way longer than expected). She is OVC normal on both with no sign of dysplasia. Note: OVC groups normal, good, and excellent into one catagory called normal. Canadians keeping it simple Very Happy
