My cousin Carolyn, who is helping me with the calender, had her first article published in her local paper, The Warren Tribune. I am so proud of her! I may be biased, but I think she did a great job!! Of course, the dog she's talking about is little Chewie.
Just had to share.....
Walking is one of life’s necessary pleasures
By Carolyn Collazo
Isn't it odd that we need to drive somewhere to take a walk? It's probably because most people want to walk where there is little or no traffic. Some nice scenery doesn't hurt, either.
This year, between the arctic weather, monsoons and tropical heat, I haven't been able to walk as much as I have wanted. I try to walk my lunch in Perkins Park on the Riverwalk when it's not under water. I enjoy the smell of the honeysuckle at this time of year. I can get a good 20 to 30 minute walk in and still have time to go through the drive through for lunch before going back to work.
Sometimes I can make it out to Howland Township Park, and I'm looking forward to walking on the new nature trail. Mill Creek Park is beautiful in all seasons, but it is a half hour away. The same goes for Austintown Township Park. These are my weekend haunts. They are more of a hike than a walk, but just as fun.
When I got a dog for my birthday, (that's another story) I thought I would walk more. The only result I have so far is a dog as out of shape as I am. I envisioned myself getting up early and taking a nice long walk before work. I still think about it before I hit the snooze button. And the dog agrees. When I do get a chance to walk the dog, he's ready to go.
I'm not one of those power walkers with weights; I'm more of a brisk stroll kind of walker. How brisk the walk is depends on how excited the dog is. Usually, the first few blocks he walks on his hind feet hoping I will follow at a full run. Then he wisely gives up and slows to just a little faster than my top speed. He can only walk as fast as I can, and I can only walk as slow as he allows me. Seems like a fair deal to me.
My doctor suggested I get a pedometer to see how many steps I walk a day. For me, one mile equals 2,000 steps. I found out I walk about one mile a day at work, mostly walking around in circles trying to remember what I was doing or where I was going.
If you don't make the big 10-K mark, you are supposed to make up the rest by climbing stairs or walking on a treadmill. Right. Forget about the treadmill, it makes me dizzy.
Don't get me wrong, I love to walk. Calling it exercise just takes the fun out of it.
According to the latest health guidelines, we are supposed to walk 10,000 steps a day. That's about five miles at my pace. To put that in perspective, it would be like walking from the Tribune to the Mall. At least I could stop at Handel's before calling a cab to take me back home.
I am hoping to take advantage of this long weekend with a couple long walks. The first one will be when I walk to watch the fireworks at Packard Park, after I park the car. _________________ gene , jonah , miko and rumor
