Hey guys,
I'm looking for a couple opinions. Our 1yr old Doodle has had a few 24-48hr periods of diahhrea. It's happened about three times in the last four weeks and is normally spread out by 7-10 days. His stool alway returns to normal afterward. Does anybody know what might be causing this? I've heard it could be allergy related. Would it be time to consider changing his food? |

Layla has a sensitive stomach and has diarhea occasionally. She had it a lot when she was a puppy, but it improved greatly with her food change.
Maybe ask the vet to rule out parasites, then try changine her food slowly to see if it helps. Possibly allergies?
Alot of people swear by giving canned pumkin too. The fibre is soluble and may help solidify the stool. I use it, works for Layla.
Good luck. |

What food is Layla on? I need to change Maya's food too. _________________ Heather, Morgan, Maya, and Sadie

| I have her on Innova (chicken and turkey). Works well for her and I feel good about the quality. It's ranked high on most dog food sites. |

well, there's a difference between loose, soft stool and diarrhea which is more like uncontrollable watery squirts. true diarrhea usually means an illness of some kind, and dogs (and humans) can become dehydrated quickly if they're not taking in enough fluids when they have diarrhea. loose/soft stool can be caused by anything from a bad reaction to food, to eating something that didn't agree with them out in the yard, to parasites... it might be worthwhile to take a stool sample in to the vet to rule out parasites, since it is a recurring problem.

We have gone through this same thing for almost 1.5 years. We tried several foods, he had many fecal tests, giardia vaccine. We tried pumpkin, slippery elm bark w/ marshmallow, pepto bis...yogurt, oatmeal, chicken and rice.
We finally ended up putting him on a very simple easy to digest diet for several weeks. He got absolutely nothing else..not treats, no chews. His loose stools and frequent diarrhea went away. Diarrhea can also be caused by IBS (irritated bowel syndrome) which is what our vet diagnosed for Tanner.
After the Rx diet we are gradually weaning him off it and on to a single protein source food. For Tanner it is Natural Balance Duck and Potato. He has done amazingly well on it. He had one loose stool when I tried giving him yogurt again. He had several loose stools last weekend from stress over all the visitors we had for my daughter's wedding.
Knowing what I know now, I would only give one new food at a time be it a treat, pumpkin, yogurt, chicken. rice what ever. I would not give another until you are sure that the first one agrees with your doodle. We were giving too large a variety of proteins and treats as well as too much food. Even a few extra tablespoons will cause him to have softer stools.
Was Tanner allergic to the previous proteins?....I don't know but if he has problems again, he is only eating duck and potato so we don't have to wonder what is upsetting his system. _________________ AnnieG & Tanner

Have you had the stool tested?
We found this to be an ongoing thing here for months but Bogie came to us with parsasites..
I think sometimes he gets into things that softens the stools or sometimes produces diarhhea. He's been good lately on the Iams High Residue sensitive stomach food.
BTW.............WELCOME!! _________________ Linda & Bogart

Definately what everyone else said. Have the poo tested to make sure...
We feed Canidae, Lucas has a sensitive stomach, and will randomly get the squirts! The was a list produced on the forum recently with poisonous plants... well, we have about a dozen of those in our yard... so... for us, seems like he keeps eating apple seeds, or the caladium, or the angel trumpets... etc...
The pumpkin helps a lot too! _________________ Jenny, Sam, Lucas, & Della |
