Hi everyone: I am just trying to ask questions and it seems the only way
was to post new topic is this correct?

I have just put a deposit on a labradoodle for March 2007 litter so I have lots of time to learn more about this breed although I have done a lot of research to get this far. My question is this, I know I want a puppy that is more lab looking than poodle with a hair coat and in the 50 to 70 pound range. Can a breeder really tell at 5 to 6 weeks of age what a puppy will look like as an adult?

Welcome to the forum and congratulations on your selection of a Labradoodle!
Please feel free to ask any questions you might have.
In answer to your question posted, I believe that some breeders can tell what the coat of their puppies will be...generally. Sometimes the coat makes a surprising change though!
If your breeder has been in the business a long time, and if the parents of your puppy have produced litters before, your breeder may be quite accurate.
Because we are dealing with nature, however, it is impossible to say for certain that a coat will or will not be a certain quality.
When my puppies were born, I could immediately see the curly coated pups, but the flatter coats did develop into lush, thick, fluffy coats at about 7 weeks of age. I had one that continued to look like a Lab (I breed F1Bs) and that particular puppy did shed. He now has whispy longer hairs, but I believe that he will remain Lab-looking.
What I am trying to say is that although your breeder can give you an educated guess, you may be surprised as your puppy grows...I have seen flat coated puppies become very fluffy and curly.
May I ask...are you allergic to dogs? If so, you are probably not going to be happy (or symptom free) if you select a puppy with a flat, Lab look to it's coat.

If allergies are a big concern, you may confine you and your puppy selection in a small area and see if you have any reactions.

I am happy to report that the flat coated pups that we have had have not bothered the people that had asthma or allergies. Different people have reactions to different things, but all in all in terms of allergy friendly no matter what generation we have found that Labradoodles of all hair types work well. the shedding factor is more inconsistent than the hypo-allergenic factor.

Usually the ones that might shed are the thick, coarser, wavy or curly coats. My velvets as I like to call the Labby Look have not had an issue with shedding, but some breeders have different results. Maybe different people's stock develops differently, so I can only speak about my own.

Knowing the coat development is just one more reason to buy from an experienced breeder that follows her puppies development throughout life. It would seem that the more litters breeders have to compare with the same breeding stock, the better their prediction results.

A California University is studying the shedding and allergens in Labradoodles now, but I think it is just a broad labradoodles study not specifying generation or coat type. It will a valuable tool for breeders and prospective owners if complete litters of various generations can be compared against each other so we could have hard cold facts about the differences. Until such a study we have to rely on each other as breeders to share our results with one another and the world making educated guesses with our limited knowledge and litter experiences.

Hi Jac & Sleepy Hollow: How wonderful this site is thank you so much.
Neither I or my family have allergies what so ever so that is not a concern.
I just really want the labby looking puppy and want to make sure my breeder can pick that for me. What do you mean by velvets? I will have first choice on this litter because it is not do until March 2007 and I am going to have to realy on the breeder to pick my puppy as it is far enough away that I won't be able to see them. My breeder will be delivering the puppy to me, I will choose through pictures and she will guide me as to the lab puppy.

She should be able to choose exactly what you want. Velvet is just my personal term for the labby look.

All the advice is great as usually the only thing I would add as a breeder is never use the word guarantee it is a strong work to use when dealing with coats on puppies. But normally like the others say you can make an educated guess and be quite acturate.

Thank goodness--what a relief!!! I thought I was losing my marbles--jury's still out on that! I started reading from the top without looking at the dates. My thoughts were:
