Maila, good to see you here!

I do vaccinate our puppies myself, and I buy the kind my vet prefers, so I always mention that this is the brand my vet recommended to me. Do you give a health record? If so you can peel the labels off the little bottles and stick them on the health record as a kind of receipt, for the sake of your client's vet when they get their second shot.

I also have become quite confident about this, so if you aren't confident, fake it! Wink

I have a vet that comes here to do well pup checkups at 6weeks old
they are given by my vet at that time, or if they cant get here i do it myself,
the reason i have my vet give first vaccine at well pup checkup is because some vets do not believe breeders do as they say ,,of course some dont, its just best that i have a professional back me up ,,what i say they can take to the bank,
Dont you do well pup checkups before your pups go home??

Dont you think you need to find another vet,
no telling what could happen
i would be worried sick if i didnt have a vet ,,fortunaly i have 4 from 2 different practices

Hello! Thanks for your responses. Before, my vet come to our house when the puppies are 3 days old, he checked them all and he took care of the de claws. I refrain from going to the "other" vet's office and take the puppies there because I am paranoid that the puppies will get something-the only time I take the puppies to the vets office is after their first shots, when they need to get microchipped. My vet does not microchip so I have to take them to the other vet's office. The litter that I have right now had been checked by my vet at 3 days old, now that he is gone I thought I will administer their shots, take them to the vet's office to get their microchip done and have their check up too before they leave to their permanent home.

How about you Maureen, when do you get their check ups done?

My puppies get their first shots when they get their 7-8 wk old check-up. The remaining puppy shots I do. Lepto in not included until their 3rd shot, & I give it as I live in the woods, so the potental for exposure to wild animals is high here. Although we have ticks here, my vet said not to bother with the Lymes vacine, seems it isn't much of an issue here?

Judi,,,just some friendly advice, this coming from a retired vet tech and breeder over 30yrs,
pups need vaccine at 6 9 and 12weeks old, if your vet has not advised you of that , im sorry,,that is even on every vial of vaccine sold,i use intervet proguard 5way only and never ever never do i give lepto to any of my dogs and i dont recommend it given to pups under 16weeks old, the chances of reaction is tooo high,

just google reactions to lepto vaccine and you will be horrified, pups can die from lepto corona or lyme disease shots, i hope i helped in some way

For years I have given my pups their 1st shot/physical at 6 wks. old. This last time I called for an appt., the tech's told me to wait until 8 wks. old..... we agreed on 7 wks & they begrudgingly gave the shots.
Although I give the 2nd, 3rd, etc. shots myself, they are purchased at the vets office. (I also pull off the stickers from the vials & stick them on the health records). I pulled out my shot records & the vets office gave me Lepto(Fort Dodge-LDI-GP) & Fort Dodge-Duramune Max 5, to mix together at 13 wks of age. I will question them again next visit. Confused

I just went to Dr. Dodd's site..... she is in the "MINIMAL VACCINE USE" camp. Her comment on Lepto was
"With the exception of a recently introduced mutivalent Leptospira spp. vaccine, the other leptospirosis vaccines afford little protection against the clinically important fields strains of leptospirosis, and the antibodies they elicit typically last only a few months."

Not sure how much changing goes on,,for the last 6yrs this has been the general view, my vets concur, and dont recommend lepto corona or lyme until the pup gets much older,
recently the reactiions to these vaccines are worse then the diseases

i know im not willing to take a chance with my babies
who benifits ,,not you not the pup

I feel for all of you with vaccinations and the controversary regarding different ones.

I know here, I keep 5 acres of 6 mowed down which greatly reduces insects including ticks ....as we have too many deer in my yard that nest down by the creek.

I also check them daily during the spring through fall for fleas and ticks.
MY breeder does what Maureen does....takes labels and puts them on sheet with dates etc as a record for both the new doodle owner and their vet.

I give Duramune Max 5 - By Fort Dodge at 6 weeks and (if they're still here), 9 weeks. For those willing to give their own shots, I send the second dose home with them with the pup. I too put the label on the health record and I save the receipt from the vaccine so that if anyone should ever question whether the pup got the shots, I can show them I paid for them. So far I haven't run into anyone doubting that the shots were given.

I agree on waiting till 16 weeks to do the lymes vaccine and then only give it if you know it's a real problem in your area. If you're using a good flea/tick/mosquito preventative, that should help too.

K-9 Advantix and Biospot both work on all 3 insects.

Lymes & Lepto seems to keep on getting mixed up here.....when do you include the Lepto in your vaccines Tink?
My vet says that Lymes does not seem to be much of a problem here & I stay away from areas I KNOW have alot of ticks, so I don't give it to my dogs. I hike in the woods with my dogs, so I make sure that they are always up on their Lepto vacination, as there is alot of wildlife about.

Judi, good question.
My vet has told me that since my animals are all either indoors or fenced in, the Lepto isn't really necessary. We're rural but have neighbors all around, so we don't see wildlife here other than an occasional rabbit. We've smelled skunks, but that's about the extent of our wildlife.

Across the road they have 2 very noisy ankle biters... to our north they have an ankle biter and a young lab and to our south is an Amish family with 9 kids and rat terriers. So I think the wildlife shies away because of all the noise and activity.

Another issue that causes concern is standing dirty water... and we're on sandy soil that's well drained and slopes away from us.

So I haven't vaccinated for Lepto.

Please let me know when do all suggest puppies should get their first rabies shot? Cooper was born on 12/29/07 and finished all his other shots yesterday Also, should we start obedience classes after the rabies? It will probably be a group class up to 10 pups. By the way, we live on Long Island in New York. Also, we still let Cooper out in the back to pee and take him on the leash only in front of our house. I need to find out when I can start taking him on longer blocks around the block. I don't think rabies are too common where I live. Do squirells carry it/have it?

I would wait until he gets the rabies shot to take him out in public. I think most puppy classes require they have this shot before attending. From his b-day he is close to 4 months so I would think your vet would be giving the rabies by now.

Dex started puppy class right around 4-5 months old - we found it to be really good for getting him some socialization and learning basic commands (and for teaching us how to train a puppy).

I s/w vet's office today. They indicated rabies is usually done at 6 months when pups get desexed. I told her mine came to me desexed. She indicated that the vet doesn't like to give too many shots at the same time. My rabies appt. is 6/23rd. I'll find out if I can get it sooner.

I guess I can't start classes in case my pup get bit by another pup with rabies. In the meantime, I'll be sure to only let my pup near other dogs I know who have had all shots including rabies. I don't think there's any chance of a squirrel or bird with rabies biting my pup while on walks, is there? I'm talking to a few different trainers to start Obedience Training.
