Posting of Puppy Pictures?

Something to consider is how many of the advirtisers that pay for this site to opperate are regular posters, who if allowed would not pay and just use the birth announcement section. we dont want to lose advertisers and risk the site overall.

I agree that it may be a good idea to limit posting in these sections to senior members, but I do not agree with restricting reading/viewing this section...I think it should be open to everyone...that's my vote Smile

I know that I love seeing the puppy pictures. Not allowing me to post is not an issue since I don't breed doodles. I'd hate to not be able to see the photos though.

I used to be a moderator for a large, busy diamond/jewelry forum which had a lot of traffic. The admins had "Network Jewelers"; those who paid a fee to basically have a virtual store on the site. Anyone else who would come along and start advertising items for sale was considered self-promotion or spam, and were advised to either apply to become a network jeweler (not all comers were approved...there were standards of practice that the admins upheld), or were pretty much banned from the site.

There was a fine line, however. There were regular jeweler members who did NOT pay, and were NOT network jewelers....but were able to give advice, give opinions on members' questions...but they could not post photos or prices of diamonds or items they had for sale. The good regular non-paying jewelers understood that, and posted accordingly. They respected the "process". For the most part the two factions got along. There was some friction, that's unavoidable. But it worked.

I don't know if that set-up would translate to dog breeders, but to my mind I can see parallels between the two forums. Offering advice vs. outright listing.

I am a hobby breeder, and find myself reluctantly at the center of this issue.
I voted for the birth announcements section as it seems a compromise and I'm not trying to be militant. I have yet to sell a pup to anyone on this site, live in the upper midwest and have never shipped a pup; so I don't see this site as a place that would pay for me to advertise on; legitimately or sneakily as has been implied.

I do enjoy sharing photos of my pups, as I know I appreciate seeing others pups. In my mind it has nothing to do with marketing on my end. I don't even bring my buyers here; I just thought of this as a fun place to share our love of doodles.

Recently, I make a point of only posting photos of pups that are already reserved. I think that too could be an option to consider. You can't sell what's already sold.

This is only my opinion, and you can take this with a grain of whatever seasoning you wish, but I think most of us are on this forum because we love our doodle, got to "know" people and their pets on this site, became addicted and genuinely are concerned about all the pets on this forum, doodles or not. We have concern for the mothers and the pups, and we love to watch them grow. We all can't be breeders but we all love to watch pups. I'm thinking if an unscrupulous breeder came on this forum, we'd probably figure it out in a hurry. That's why I'm for the new category for senior members to post in. I would think all should be able to look, what's the harm in that? I mean besides getting yet another doodle! Laughing

Hmmm. I haven't really felt that any particular breeder on this forum has ever listed puppies, with price tags and availability....or talked about any of their pups with the intent to make a sale to a member, or lurker.
It may have happened, I am just not aware of it.

This forum hasn't been a breeder's forum to "post litters for sale." Making members aware of a breeder's website link....blog links, etc. is essentially allowing them to advertise the fact that they are in the business and those interested can visit their sites. I think that is a huge, gracious help to those breeders...without allowing them to actually "sell" a pup on this forum. I think there may be a fine line there....
meaning, is it advertising ~to allow their website link after posting an opinion or givng some advice? In a way it is.....but,
I must say, that the breeders on this forum have very, very valuable information and advice....that all doodle owners benefit from and I consider those experienced breeders experts on the doodle quirks, coats, diets, training, temperments and general tid-bits of info! I have always been so glad that they post here and that I can visit their sites and learn even more. In other words, I am glad they are identified as breeder's with their sites available so that I am confident to a certain extent that they know what they are talking about.....I am excited to see the photos of their new puppies, excited because I love puppy pics and excited for the breeder's who have them.
Now with that said, I know of many owners who have contributed wonderful insight and information and they are not breeders....but are very knowledgable and have invaluable experiences to share....it is nice though that we can know who is who.

Limiting posts to Senior members....will eliminate most of the casual folks, or those who aren't reputable breeder's~ in some way, or another.

Sorry I am soooo long winded....thinking out loud... and half asleep....

As far as puppy pictures are concerned.....
and those adorable pics with the puppy pile all around mama....

an owner is free to post pics of his new puppy....and perhaps the photo has other litter mates in it??....they can even say where they bought their puppy from....yes?

Interesting to read the posts and compare the poll...looks like most of the posts favor birth announcements and most of the poll results favor no announcements because it appears to be advertising.

I am in favor of the birth announcements. I get very excited when we have puppies and it is something special to share with my friends at the forum.

Honestly, if people are inclined to find out more about my business through the announcement, I am pleased but that is not my reason for posting. (I am very careful not to "sell" my puppies in posts.)

As you know, many of the breeders here (especially senior members) contribute hours and hours of time in answering questions, giving advice and generally helping others...we are not in it for any type of renumeration. But, Jane makes a good point...and maybe I am mistaking her intent, but as I am considering whether or not new owners should post their puppy pictures...I say, yes! They absolutely should...but (here is where I will make waves, I'm sure) this forum stands for quality...quality breeding practices and quality care of pet dogs. To this end, the long term members and breeders have contributed so much time and energy, expertise and help...so, it really is not fair to tell these long-term members that they may not advertise their litters while allowing puppy buyers to post glowing reports about their breeders...breeders who have not contributed anything to the value of this forum and breeders who are unknown, and undocumented regarding quality.

I would not really be bothered by people posting that they got their puppies from xxx breeder and that they are so happy with their purchase...except that yyy breeder, who posts on this forum every day for 3 years is not allowed to post that they have puppies for sale.

Sooooo, what I am saying is that the birth announcements would be a welcome way for senior breeders to mention their litters and brag a bit...but not openly advertise. And, I believe, that the general public should be held to similar standards...post pictures of their puppies, by all means! And brag about their sweet additions...but stop there...don't tell everyone what a good price they paid, where their breeder is located, why they think that everyone should buy from their breeder...especially since most of the "buyers" are not usually informed about why breeding standards are important factors indicitive of quality breeding.

Please don't get me wrong...I love to see the new puppy announcements! Whether from senior breeders or from new members announcing their newest addition. I am simply saying that the rules should be the same for both categories. Unknown breeders should not be given any more "bragging rights" (through customers) than senior breeders are in selling their puppies.

Finally, I think that breeders who pay Mark to advertise on the forum should be given that right...to advertise litters in the posts or by having their customers report their satisfaction. These breeders are screened by Mark and comply with quality breeding standards...such breeding are rightfully held out as examples.
