In essence, I think the seeds of his ideas are very important although perhaps execution needs to be contextualized with every case---whoever made the point about the show being based on "extreme" cases---right on!! I totally think we are looking at cases that are "extreme" on both ends--the dogs AND the people
I don't particularly believe that Mr. Milan's techniques are all that NEW either...and I'm not that old ....maybe b/c I'm very familiar w/Cesar's cultural background...hhhmmm...
I grew up watching my grandfather use pretty much the same techniques with ALL his animals--dogs, horses, cows, pigs, etc....you name it, he controlled it in a gentle yet firm manner...animals always respected my grandfather and naturally gravitated towards him....he interacted from a place of utter respect for the animal but also from a place of guardianship--he ALWAYS gave them credit for being thinking and emotional beings.
Sooooo,
I answered the poll yes---b/c I do find his approach useful and I do employ similar techniques myself---I WILL NOT, however, give him credit for teaching me the "ssshhhtt" though---I've been ssshhhtt'd by my family for years!! LOL!!
I say,
take what you will,
leave what you don't like,
and let others do the same.
p.s. TO HIS CREDIT: since the show, A TON more people have become aware of their relationships with their dogs...how to hold yourself mentally--not just for dogs, but in life in general.... _________________ REASON #12, "Why I love my doodle so": My doodle's inquisitive nature keeps her learning all the time! |

Well, I don't get the channel his show is on, but I think I know the basics of what he is teaching. I am lucky that for the most part Holly (6 months old) is a sweet, good natured dog. She definitely has stuff she (we) need to work on (pulling on leash, jumping up on people) but it seems Cesar Milan's techniques are a little overly aggressive. Maybe they work for other dogs, but Holly seems to respond best to positive methods and praise.
There is a TV show I do watch, on Animal Planet, 'It's me or the Dog'-- anyone seen this? I think the dog trainer's name is Victoria, and her methods seem to work wtih Holly. She uses sound aversion and I used this very successfully when Holly was in a puppy nipping/mouthing stage with my kids. She also 'ignores' bad behavior (leaves the room, turns her back, etc)-- not really a true punishment, but withdrawing attention apparently extinguishes the bad behavior. It certainly works for Holly. |
