Cerf testing...

I am so excited to be able to get my dogs eyes examined next week for so cheap, that I didn't think to ask.........
Is there a proper AGE to have them tested? Tuesday is going on 3, but Marley is about to turn 8 months. Is he too young? Is there a prefered age to get their first eye exam done? Confused

Great news! I am so happy that you found a bargain...that always helps!
There is no age limit that I know of. In fact, many breeders test their young pups. I have begun testing as early as 4 months of age for my breeding stock. It does need to be done annually, so I don't think that there is a minimum age.
It isn't a bad test either...just like when we get our eyes tested, they put drops in to dialate and then take them to a darkened room and look into their eyes using lights. Pretty routine.

What does Cerf test for? what is the pathology? is it a heritable trait? do we know the gene?

This is what I am going to (at a yearly dog show)...and what they are doing.....
The onlly other place I found was UC Davis, (quoted me about $60 I believe.)
PAWSitiveID tests with DNA for
PRA, Cone Degeneration,& Retinal Dystrophy,

Dr. Sara Maxwell, DVM, MS,
Board Certified Veterinary Ophthalmologist
Cost: $20.00

Dr Maxwell will perform eye examinations to detect inherited eye diseases such as cataracts, progressive retinal atrophy (PRA) & retinal dysphasia. The examination is quick & painless & is required for registration by the Canine Eye Registration Foundation (CERF). As eye drops are applied to dilate pupils, it is recommended that the examination be performed after your dog has completed judging. The effect of the eye drops lasts about three hours.

I took Kenya and Coco in a CERF clinic in Colorado Springs, CO today. They had an AKC dog show, it cost me $30.00 each dog. I was asked to fill out the form with my dogs' registration #'s and so I advised them they were not AKC registered, the vet was not sure if I can get them certified because they were under a different registry. I cannot seem to find in the CERF website how I can go about registering them. Is there a form I need to fill out or should I just send my copy of the CERF form the vet gave me along with the payment?

Also, while I was filling out the forms, a lady (I think she works for the clinic), hold my dog's for me. She said, "I will never let my lab be bred with a poodle". I think my face got so red-maybe the weather has something to do with it, but I stopped writing and turned to the lady. I said, "I respect your opinion about your dog but you don't have to say anything. Being mixed breeds did not make my dogs lesser dogs! Then I grabbed the leash and told her I can hold my dogs myself and fill out the forms at the same time!!! Wink

Wow, that's sad!
I went to an AKC dog show and had my dogs done too...I was very fortunate to have a pretty good experience.

I bet the dog show you went to was bigger.
Your dogs can be certified off of your micro-chip number. OFA & pennHIP also can be registered off of their micro-chip number.

Yes, it was a big indoor AKC show. So should I just send them the copy of my CERF form? How did you send yours?

First off...before you send off your paperwork, Copy both the front & back of your paperwork & hang on to it!
Record their microchip number next to the "coat color type", under "permanent ID#"
Registration instructions are on the back...and send of the form to VMDB/CERF at the address listed. Don't forget to send $15 fee for hybrids, not the $12 for the purebreds dogs Confused
