Could you try making time in the car super fun for him? Maybe give him a special treat when he's in and settled? |
The special treat is what we have been trying... and yes, I know, we are enablers as well... I guess we can try some kind of SUPER DOOPER special treat? Hmmmm... we'll try that... _________________ Jenny, Sam, Lucas, & Della |

The thing that gets me is that he seems fine being in or out of the car. It's the actual process of jumping inor out that he doesn't want to do. Right?
What if the car wasn't on the driveway. Maybe if the car was on the lawn?
Any thoughts? _________________ Diane |

Keep in mind, he will jump on to the driveway out of the sedan, just not the SUV.
Maybe he just finds it amusing? _________________ Jenny, Sam, Lucas, & Della |

I am not letting Maya read this post as she will try to start this too! hahahaha. I tosses apple slices in the back to get Maya to go in sometimes. _________________ Heather, Morgan, Maya, and Sadie

Maybe it's us he is finding amusing.
He's heard the rumor that some doodles get picked up and he wants his piece. Who knows what they are thinking?
Just today Remy decided that he wants to chew on the sliding door frame. So I put his short leash on and when he went to chew I told him to leave it and gave a tug on the leash. After the second time, he looked up at me went over and took the end of the leash to the door jamb and laid on it while he went back to chewing.
I know I'm not supposed to laugh, But Bwaaaaahaaaa.....
He is sooo cute! _________________ Diane |

That is hilarious! Aren't they so smart? That reminds me of when Lucas was younger, he would sneak a sock to chew on, and place it under one of his toys, when we glanced at him, all looked okay... but when you really stopped to look??? He hadn't touched his toy, but was chewing on a sock instead!
Back to Lucas and the truck? What if he teaches Della, that it's much cooler to be lifted in and out of the truck??? _________________ Jenny, Sam, Lucas, & Della |

I'm cracking up laughing at this post. Let's hope he doesn't teach her that. Give her lots of praise for being a good girl and jumping in Maybe he'll get jealous.
These dogs are so funny. One story (not to hijack or anything )for awhile, Dexter would refuse to get in the car at all if we put Kirby in first (he has gotten over that). When we forced him into the car he would shun us. He would hang his head over the back seat and refuse to look at us...totally cracked us up. _________________ Leslie M |

My 74lb. lab developed severe arthritis from jumping in and out of my SUV. She took arthrits medicine every day for 5 years. I then bought steps from Lowes (kept them in the back of the truck because she went everywhere with me) and she loved them. People used to get the biggest kick out of her going up and down those steps. Of course, she did love to go to the park too and go up and down the sliding board on the kids playground. |

This post is great ...................so funny
Denver went through a phase where he would
just put his two front paws on the back seat of the car
and turn around and look at me like Mom, I can't do it!!!!!!!!!!!!
So hubby would help him in as Denver is too heavy for me.
I talked to vet to see if there could be a physical reason and she checked
him out and it was decided that lazyiness is what his problem was
babahahahhaaaaaaaaaa.
Next time Denver did it I just sat in the driver seat and told him
I am leaving and if you want to ride you better get in cause It is just you and me and I cannot lift you..........I waited and nothing so then I said
bye bye and you know of course that he flew into the car with
no problem....................gotta love them!!! _________________ Sue & Denver & Ryder

I totally an begining to think it was out of laziness that Lucas stopped jumping in and out of the truck...
But now we have the jumping out part... gotta work on jumping in... too bad Della can't jump in on her own yet ( not for her lack of trying )... this may be alll it takes...
Yeah, I plan to try the "I'm leaving you" one as well... I am just trying to find the right time... I have noticed, some things are a bit more complicated with 2 dogs... hee hee... ofcourse, many things are much easier... _________________ Jenny, Sam, Lucas, & Della |

when kumo was about 6 months old we started trying to teach him to jump into the back of the station wagon. he had been jumping out for some time, but he would NOT jump in. finally, we used the frisbee which he LOVES to fetch as the bait -- threw it into the open station wagon, and he jumped right in after it! then we rewarded him with bits of leftover steak. it took only a few repetitions of this before he was jumping in on his own. we haven't started teaching this with ursus yet, he's still too young.
