Buying Puppies off the Web.

I understand where you're coming from, Bid, especially in view of what you're dealing with as a rescue organization, but as a person who bought a puppy sight unseen (except for photos) from a breeder whom I got to know through this forum, I have to say that it's worked beautifully for us. The breeder got a very good sense of who I was, and I certainly got a good sense of who she was and how she felt about her puppies. I do think that buying through contacts made here is an unusual opportunity which most people don't have.

How sad that there are so many labradoodles needing rescue. Careless breeding is the bane of most dog types and causes so much needless heartbreak and waste of puppy lives.

We have had two experiences with getting a dog sight unseen only visiting via email and websites.

The first was horrible. Their website was great but incredibly misleading. The emails back and forth were as well.

I was a very uninformed buyer, did not know what questions to ask, hadn't done my homework, was too gullible.

Then I discovered this forum, a source of incredible information.

The second...well we got Tanner from a breeder on this forum, sight unseen...we had only seen 1 picture of Tanner. This experience was wonderful, and he has been everything we could have ever wanted in a doodle and more.

So I would say the buyer has to become a well informed buyer. I think you can purchase a puppy from a website not having actually seen your puppy in person but only when you have done your research.

I just skimmed the last few pages of this thread, so forgive me if this was addressed....

But I would imagine it's just as difficult for a breeder to choose a buyer off the web, sight-unseen. They're taking a bit of a leap of faith themselves, if they are ethical breeders such as the ones on this forum. It's a two-way street...the heart strings tug both ways.

That is sooooo true Lynn. You can't imagine how important the updates are to a breeder. I don't care how much time you spend exchanging e-mails, talking, etc. with a buyer, you still have that fear of the buyer not being happy, or that the buyer isn't who you thought they were. When you get that phone call saying they received the puppy and that the puppy is everything they imagined and then you continue to hear from them and get pictures, you know a "match was made".

I did alot of research, and bought from a breeder online, I contacted some of the people who had bought from her, and spoke a bit with her over the phone/email...

Lucas arrived, a little bit freaked out, and looking great and all is well... but for the next one...

I will not fly my pup, I will only buy after visiting the site in person ...

only because, if something did go wrong with Lucas, there would always be that little piece of me that wondered if it was because of the breeder... having not experienced his original home in person, or met the breeder in person, I think I would question my own decision in picking that particular breeder... site unseen...

For me, leaving as little to the imagination as possible, is better...

personally I think the MOST IDEAL way is when a breeder (me) can fly the puppy, in the cabin, to an airport near the new owner so we can meet, face to face, and the puppy hasn't taken the trip in a crate in the belly of an airplane. I always hope that will happen with at least one of our puppies.

Yes, I have to say I was VERY worried about Jofi flying all the way from Oz to the Netherlands (she had a stop-over in Kwala Lumpa, Malaysia). However, she arrived fine and my experience with buying from an overseas on-line breeder has been great. I spoke to others who'd had puppies from the same breeder and had nothing but glowing reports. The dogs are health tested and I sent a long e-mail of questions before committing to buy a puppy from them. I'm now waiting for another puppy from Australia - from Rutland Manor.

The only disadvantage I've seen (of course there is the cost but for us buying locally involved a year- to 2 year wait) is that Jofi has never got on with her crate. I suspect it has something to do with the time confined in a travel crate during her journey. I don't blame her and we're happy for her to have free roam of the kitchen when we're away (provided she doesn't nibble on any more tortoises!).

Boy was I lucky!
I spent 3 days on the spca sites all around my province looking to adopt a dog.
I had never met a Labradoodle although knew they were super cute.
Kiijii site-standard poodle-called at 10am-visited at 1pm -was home with Khalua at 2pm (free)
Very well loved, healthy (fingers crossed) I know nothing of testing, hips , family history-hate that.
But he is well & we love him MORE than anything in the world!!

Thanks for getting my dog's name spelled correctly!
He came with his name, which I found difficult to remember (!!!), hard to pronounce & I never seem to spell it right !!!
He's been ours for 7 weeks & for the first 2 weeks I kept calling him Kazula (what is that about?)
