WELCOME!!
Glad to hear that you are considering DOODLES!! Wink Very Happy
And your Annie sounds like she could have been a doodle from your description of her---and her photo, JUST PRECIOUS!! THANKS for sharing that!! I'm so sorry about your loss and Annie sounds like a wonderful soul to have had the pleasure to know!! I have all the confidence in the world that you'll find another dog (maybe a doodle!!! Very Happy) who will fill your life with love and companionship once again!!

Lynn is right on about her comparison...I've known (never owned) several PWD's and they have all been great companions to their owners--who frankly, invested lots of time training with them as ANY dog owner should...Wink

...it is frankly what people mistake my Mija doodle for the most (particularly when her hair is long)...Poodle is the second comparison (particularly with her hair short)...she's an F1b--more poodle in her with soft wavy/spiral fleece coat)...

I, personally, think its tough to judge breeds when I'd rather judge an individual dog's personality...BUT...if we were to nit-pick about some differences:
-the coats look similar but don't feel similar--to me, Wink...a difference in thickness and coarseness I think...also, shed factor--probably?
-body shapes are certainly different--more stout and compact versus taller and perhaps leaner (not always the rule of course! LOL!)....

(side note: many water breed dogs have webbed feet) Wink Smile

--and my doodle is a water-loving maniac--open water, the hose, small puddles, a tiny drip, LOL!! Wink she was shy about it at first, but, living in the desert--she quickly came to realize what a gift water can be!! Wink

There is TONS of great information available on this forum regarding doodles, in general....We do hope you'll stick around and share more!!
Very Happy Very Happy Very Happy Cool Cool

Hi Terry and Welcome!!!

The Porties tend to have quite a few health issues,
this is because of such a small gene pool and the line breeding and inbreeding that goes on in that breed

the Doodles especially the F1 or F1B's tend to retain the 'HYBRID vigor'
Hybrid vigor is actually because normally most genetic problems do require both parents to carry the gene in order to pass it on to their offspring ,

Aussiedoodles i am finding the majority are low to no shed, and very soft coated,
I bred and trained aussies for many years,,and love the breed
in fact i have downsized and limited myself in breeding of Labradoodles in order to breed aussiedoodles

Goldendoodles as well are very low shed (first generation is all we breed, because breeding back to poodle to goldendoodle does tend to produce to much of a poodle like coat)

the F1 B Labradoodles are the most likly of any to be low shed and allergy friendly of any doodle and they have a very managable coat for the most part

Im so excited you found us here, this is a awsome group of folks,
for the most part Smile

Welcome !!!

Hi,
I have been looking in for a long time thought that it was time I logged on.
I have a cjhocolate Doodles 3rd generation. She is the best dog we have ever had. She has been mistaken for a Portie. They make great freinds.

Hey everyone!

Thanks a million for your feedback and recommendations. I'm still learning and researching and hope to meet up with Linda out here. Your dogs are all so beautiful!

Welcome to the site! I am so sorry to hear of your loss... she was beautiful!

I dont know much about PWD's but have aways admired them, such good looking dogs...

We have 2 labradoodles (ALF2) we choose the breed because... we wanted an sweet and athletic dog, that was not too needy, did not shed, and would not smell...

That is what we got!

Our doodles love to...
go for walks/hikes...to the store
go boating
go swimming
retrieve balls
snuggle
lay around

Neither of them shed or smell...

Hope this helps!!!

Hi,
Boy, they seem a lot alike- the Porties and the Doodles! Has anyone ever seen a brown and white parti?

Terry

Hi Terry and welcome. I too do not have anything to share about the differences in breeds. I have a chocolate australian-Multigen Labreadoodle. We love him to peices for his temperment and he's as smart as a whip. He's almost 8 months old now and very calm.

So sorry for your loss. Annie looked like a amazing dog. Welcome and I hope you find the perfect pup for you.

Hi again,

You guys are so helpful. I just spent well over an hour researching available pups and let me tell you, it's hard to know who to trust; there are so many out there selling them!

If anyone can connect me with a VERY reputable breeder who has or will soon have brown (preferably brown/white parti's) Australian Labradoodles with great temperament and health, please let me know. I know I sound picky : 0

My head is spinning, at this point.

I have also been researching Porties but I'm getting the sense that the pups here might be a tad bit more friendly and sweet.

Thanks, everyone!

Terry

Hi Terry!
Welcome to Doodleland! It's a wonderful place!
I know you are heartbroken about your Annie - she was a beautiful dog! I lost my Eskie almost a year ago, and still miss her terribly, but Tyke has been a real comfort, and a source of comic relief!
I didn't know much about PWDs until someone asked me if Tyke was a PWD puppy ( I thought then that they only came in black!). I met one at Tyke's agility class, and he is such a cool dog! A little more laid back than Tyke, but then, he was an adult, and Tyke is still full of puppy!
Whatever you decide to get, I wish you many years of happiness with your pup - and stick around and post often!!

Abby's an F1b Goldendoodle and as you can see she's enthralled by the Portuguese Water Dog. Abby has a wool coat (hair) and does not shed. She's a bit timid so I groom her myself. I would check out any prospects in person as my experience buying sight unseen was not a pleasant experience. When you do choose a breeder check back here for references to avoid an experience like mine. I wish I'd have checked here first because the folks here are honest and straight forward. [img][/img]
