Hello,
Vegas is now 14 weeks old and he is unwilling to go for walks from our house. As soon as we leave our drive way, he plops down and won't move...he even truns around and faces back towards the house. His tail is up, so i know he is not scared. I toss treats in front of me, and he gets them, but then plops down again. We bought steak treats from Omaha Steaks to only use on walks. These didn't work. I tried carrying his favorite toy...this doesn't work either. This weekend, we drove down the block and walked him fron there and he did great. However, when he does walk, he wants to meet everyone.....we have been working on "Leave it" and "look at me".

Any advice on how to get him to walk away from the house? I don't want to force things, because he'll end up hating walking altogether.

Here are some updated pics:

OMG he is so cute! We went through this with Dexter too. We would walk a few feet and he would just sit down and refuse to move. I brought treats and would try to lure him with them. We took very very short walks at first (just 1 or 2 houses away). We just took it slowly and did very short distances. After a bit we built up to a 1/2 mile walk Smile Just give him some time...

The best was the time I brought him to the beach around 16-18 weeks...we made progress and walked a decent way. Then it was time to walk back and he sat and would not move! I wound up having to carry him back to the car (I know, bad thing to do, but he would not move)...everyone along the way was laughing at me because he was pretty large even at a young age Smile

IF we are able to get him out of the house, people comment on him all the time. Mostly we hear: "He looks like a real live Teddy Bear".

I almost feel like we should spin him around really fast 10 times to disorient him and then go for a walk.

Tanner did the very same thing and what I did that cured it was to take him on a walk with another dog. He loves my daughter's doxie, Jackson, and he just followed him and tried to do what Jackson did.

Do you have someone that you can go on a walk with? We went to a neutral location but after 1 walk with Jackson he was fine to walk in our neighborhood too..

Good luck!

Absolutely adorable. Sadie (9 weeks now) is getting pretty good on walks now, but at first we needed 2 people to go. One with the leash and one a few feet ahead sometimes running so she would follow. Perhaps 2 people or another dog would help? Sadie also does a lot better on the way back on a walk. She seems to understand "let's go home" and leads the way. I'm not sure if you can do the way back first to help, or if Sadie just recognized the same smells she passed on the way out. Good luck! And he does look like a teddy bear!

Wow, he and Stella really are like twins! I'll add a picture of her below.

I think you've gotten some great advice. Will he walk if you carry him down a house or two and then put him down? If so, maybe you could do that and keep making the distance from your house shorter and shorter each walk until he'll start from home? Just another idea!

Has he finished his third round of shots? If not, are you paranoid about walking him in public? I haven't even tried with Stella yet because she's only had her 2nd set and the vet basically scared the bejeebers out of me and pretty much advised that she be kept at home until a week after her third set of vax -- meaning 3.5 weeks from now! I'm really getting tired of being locked at home and feel like starting to walk her since we seem to be the only puppy owners I know who are following this guideline. What did your vet say?

this is definitely advice you should follow...we didn't start walking Dex outside of our back yard until he had his last shots (I can't even remember...maybe 14-16 weeks old??). I would advise trying to get young puppies used to a leash when you bring them home - you can walk them around the house or around your back yard.

He just makes me SMILE!! Very Happy
He is JUST like a teddy bear! My neighbor says that about Bogart all the time too. I'm trying to convince her to get one! Wink

I think the walking away from the house will come in time. Have you thought about getting someone to stand a few houses down at a time and getting him to walk toward that person? They could get him really excited with YAY's and things and treats! Then just keep doing this around the block???

Thanks, Leslie. I think I just needed one person to tell me that! Lots of people on the forum with a puppy are talking about taking them for walks, my trainer is encouraging it and really poo-poo'ing the vet's advice, others in my puppy class are all over town, etc. I hate feeling like the neurotic one (as usual)! I'm glad you followed the advice. I've stuck it out this long so I guess I shouldn't stop now!

Oh my! Stella and Vegas may just be the cutest LD's I've ever seen! (Shhh, don't tell Libby Lu I said that.) Could you tell me more about them? Are they Australian, mini's, etc? They just look so soft and fluffy. Their coats look much thicker than Libby's, whose coat is very thin and I've even wonderered if her little body could get sunburned.
Your dogs are truly beautiful. Very Happy

Thanks for all the comments. I don't want Vegas to get too big of a head and think he is the best looking dood out there.

He is a mini Multigen. Both his parents were 25 lbs and each had a multigen and poodle parent. He is 13 lbs and I think will probably grow to almost 30.

so, so cute!

Jack did this on walks when we got him. The puppy kindergarten instructor suggested his vision was still developing and he just couldn't see very far. Perhaps that's why Vegas is hesitant? He is still really young. Jack is fine on walks now, and I notice that he can actually spot things - like a bird taking off, and follow it. He didn't before, and I really think everything was just a big blur.

Thanks for the nice comments, doodleallday! I say it's lucky she's so darn cute with all the mischief she gets into! Anyway, she's a multigen (her dad is a 6th generation, not sure of her mom but she came directly from Tegan Park); her mom is a smaller standard and dad is a medium so she'll probably be somewhere in between. The breeder expects her to be 40-50 lbs. and 20-22 inches tall. She's grown so much already! She's probably about 13 lbs. now, too. Anyway, let me know if you have any other questions!
