Another day, another Foxtail disaster...
We were gone for 2 days, left the dogs/puppies with a dog sitter...came back fairly late last night. This morning Dave brings a puppy to me and says, "Jac, something is wrong with this guy's eye..." It was goopy and closed and would not open, the other side was goopy too so I didn't know for sure, but right away I suspected another Foxtail!
I called UC Davis emergency vet, took the pup in and, sure enough, he had a Foxtail in his eye! UGH! It had been there for at least 2 days, the vet said.
Good news is that the cornea was not pierced...it was lying under his third elyelid.
He was sooooooo good, he didn't flinch or cry or anything...and she kept probing his eye with gauze, Q-Tips and finally tweezers...but she got it all and carefully examined both eyes.
It was so sad...I cried and cried...poor baby...I asked her if he would be blind and she said that he would not...he will recover. Thank God!
This is such a nightmare! _________________ jacque.bayley.lexie.chase.rosie.nitos.amelia.dupree.madison.sherwood.gerry www.backporchlabradoodles-jacque.blogspot.com www.backporchlabradoodles.com |

Oh Jac, this is turning into a horror story. Could you haul in some pea gravel and cover the area you have fenced in to minimize the contact with the weeds? Are the foxtails blowing in the wind? I don't how you could combat that.
You must be at your wits end. Hugs to both you and Dave.
I'm glad the puppy's eye will be ok. Those foxtails are NASTY _________________ Vicky (Jett and Copper) |

Oh Jac, I'm so sorry for this struggle with those darn foxtails!!!
I know its a lot of area to work with but...
Weed wack 'em down,
rake 'em all up and put into trash bags...keep cleaning up area then turn soil over and rake roots out, dispose again...
keep going at it till all you see is brown...then, from there you should have a cleaner slate to work with...re-seed with better grasses or pea gravel it or cement block it or combinations there of....
I wish I were closer--I'd come help with weed-whacking...funny enough, an outside job I really enjoy!
I sincerely hope you find respite from all this soon!

Thanks, Vanessa, I wish you were closer too!
We actually have someone working on the weed whacking every day! If we do stay here (we are thinking of a smaller place now... ) we will certainly take your suggestions...I agree that taking it down to the dirt and starting over is the only way to control these things. I don't mind doing that one bit...but we may move in a month so we are trying to control it as best we can until we know for sure...still, it would be worthwhile to save the suffering of these poor dogs! _________________ jacque.bayley.lexie.chase.rosie.nitos.amelia.dupree.madison.sherwood.gerry www.backporchlabradoodles-jacque.blogspot.com www.backporchlabradoodles.com |
