Thanks Blueteal! I love the site already! I've learned a few new things, met some very helpful people, and have jumped into some very interesting conversations. Just what I was hoping for! _________________ www.tinkerdoodle.net

Thanks Di.
I got some good news this morning!
I contacted the woman I got my labs from and she said that Montanas hips have been OFA'd... she's rated Good. So she is trying to get the papers to prove it from her EX dh for me. The reason these dogs were available was that they're divorcing, so she has to go through her lawyer to his to get anything accomplished. I really hope I get the paperwork by the time the pups are here! That would save me some $$ and hassle!
Canada's parents had been done but she hasn't. _________________ www.tinkerdoodle.net

Hey Tink, I have more good news for you. Go to www.offa.org and you can get a copy of her OFA certification online as long as you know her registered name or her registration number.
It's a good day _________________ Di & Archie

Thanks Di, It would have been a wonderful day but I can't find the dogs in their records. I tried by reg #, and name and nothing showed up.
I also tried running their parents numbers and couldn't find any of them.

Maybe they did PennHIp...sometimes people say "good, or execellent" instead of the percentile because they know that most people don't understand the percentile.
AKC should have the records if the dogs are registered. _________________ jacque.bayley.lexie.chase.rosie.nitos.amelia.dupree.madison.sherwood.gerry www.backporchlabradoodles-jacque.blogspot.com www.backporchlabradoodles.com |

Well, that would have been nice. If Montana's hips have been certified with OFA, it will show up on their website. If they just had preliminary testing done on her, I doubt it would show up on their website. If she can get a copy of that, if that's what was done, it would help. Good luck _________________ Di & Archie

To resurrect an old topic... Montanas reg papers say OFA24G by her dams name, so I tried searching her out on the OFA site. It says "OFA24G unknown other than as parent " so does that mean her dams parent? _________________ www.tinkerdoodle.net

Hi Tink,
Not an expert, but I would read it to be the dog that has that number (Montana's dam, right?) is only known in the registry as a parent to other tested OFA dogs. So I'm guessing that Montana's dam was not OFA certified, but some of her puppies have been...therefore Montana's dam is identified just to show the relationship to her tested puppies. Does that make sense?
From the OFA FAQ section:
Are the sire and dam fields on the applications required to be filled out?
No, the sire and dam are not required entries, however they are useful in helping breeders analyze the health records of related animals. If at all possible, the sire and dam AKC registration and/or OFA numbers should be included. This will allow relationships to show properly in internet search results. |

Thanks Linda! I'd never encountered that before, but that does make sense. I was told by the lady I bought them from that Montana had been tested, but I can't find records of it and she claims her estranged husband has their paperwork and is being a pita about giving her anything right now.
I hope you're right! That would save me a nice chunk if I only have to get Canada done. _________________ www.tinkerdoodle.net

Tink,
You say: The dams are both 5 yrs old and appear to be in great health and condition thankfully.
My question is , how long will you breed the females? Do Breeders usually retire the females when they reach 5 yrs of age?
I would consider this before spending $ on testing. Just a thought.
I would reassure prospective buyers a good warantee.
How are you doing with the 2 litters? I didn't see anything posted. My heart goes out to you, one litter of 9 is plenty for us...one bout of diarrhea with this last litter sent us racing to an emergency vet at 4 am one Sunday to check for "parvo". My mind was racing with terrible thoughts of having to have them all admitted to a hospital or worse , losing the entire litter at 5 weeks of age ...the worse nightmare imaginable for a breeder...as we had let people into our homes to look and pick and choose..with of course instructions to leave shoes out doors before entering and making them scrub their hands before touching any of them.
The worry and painstaking caution breeders MUST attend to is enough to make you wonder why we do it...
yet the pro's always outweigh the cons...
This breed is the most wonderful breed on earth..
Happy rearing of all the pups Tink...I wish I lived closer to you to give you a hand. I love these darlings...
Well wishes are sent your way.

M&T, Thanks for your post.
This will be Montanas first litter in spite of her age. My vet says she's got the health and energy of a much younger dog, so while he wasn't concerned with breeding her, much will depend on how she does with this litter as to whether I do it again. The way she moves and can jump and run, I'm convinced her hips are sound. I'm planning to offer a 2 yr guarantee based on this. I do have someone with a very nice golden lab male who has asked if he might be able to use her for 1 litter with his male, so we're going to negotiate... but I do need to see how this goes first. He's offered to bring buyers and desperately wants a pup for himself as his dog is 8 yrs old and a real gem. So it's looking like this will be Montanas only Labradoodle litter.
Canada has had 2 previous litters but came to me fat and sassy, so again the vet wasn't concerned. Feeding such a large litter, I am of course keeping a close eye on things, but so far she's doing beautifullly. The growth in the pups already and the fact that they seem very content speaks volumes. I'm giving her all she can eat and drink, so she's actually looking good again already. She too is moving well and is a very powerful dog. If she continues to do well, I'd like to get one more Labradoodle litter out of her, but that will depend on my vets opinion as well. I'm just SO happy with her pups, her attitude, and how smoothly she handles it all. Again, based on just our observations, I'm not worried about the guarantee. She's old enough and tends to be a bit on the heavy side even when not bred, so if her hips were bad, I believe we'd be seeing some sign of it by this age and there just isn't anything causing concern.
I had planned to get them both tested prior to breeding, but now that's it's done and they'll be this much older, I'm thinking I might be better off spending that money on younger dams. I'm leaning toward saving at least one female pup for myself as a future breeding prospect. Right now it's too early to tell how things will go in the end, but for now I'm encouraged. _________________ www.tinkerdoodle.net
