We recently placed an F1B Apricot Labradoodle on reserve until properly weaned and socialized. We should be getting him in 4 weeks. I have a few questions regarding the F1B's in particular:

1) What is the difference in grooming between the two (F1's vs F1B's)

2) Are there noticeable temperament differences between F1's and F1B's?

3) What is the most cumbersome thing about the coat of an F1B...what is the best thing?

4) We have an incredible smart and spoiled dachshund right now, any advice for introductions?

Thank You so much for the help.

Hi F1BNewbee

Tanner's mom, Annie, here. Tanner is a F1B. I let the grooming thing get away from me in the begining. Crying or Very sad Didn't realize that as he was getting wet in the snow, his legs were matting. Results - groomer had to give him a buzz cut on all but his tail.Embarassed

Now, I brush him almost every night having invested in several great tools that I learned about on this forum and I think I can stay on top of it. He absolutely does not shed. I can get a brush or comb full of fuzz but that is all.

He also is a self cleaning dog...no kidding...his legs and feet can be filthy and the next time I look, he is clean. Of course it is probably on my couch throws, throw rugs and carpet...but hey, he looks great.

I don't have any comparison on temperment...just think his is the best

Good look and enjoy!

Mine turns to dust and ends up everywhere! Wink

Welcome F1BNewbee....there is a wealth of information here. I have an F1B female, and so far brushing irregularly I've had no problems with mats...knock wood. I use a grooma rake and she's good with that. My F1 requires a little more attention because he's a mild shedder with a wiry coat. Keeps the tubling hair balls to a minimum! Wink

Hi and Welcome to Doodle land
I have an F1, short smooth coat and at ten months old still has not started to shed. Grooming for us is very low key. I brush his beard Wink

WElcome F1bnewbee Smile It all depends on what kind of coat your pup has. It's amazing how different pups can be out of the same litter. Some will take more of the poodle genes, others more of the lab genes. You can have both wool and fleece coats in an F1b litter. The fleece coats are the easiest to maintain but still brushing is a must. Obviously, the wool coats are more maintenance.

Whichever you get, you will love Smile

Annieg, great pic of Tanner Smile He's such a handsome boy Wink

Ditto...what Diane said!
Every litter has a variety of coats. It will all depend on the type of coat you get, whether or not grooming is more troublesome.
And, like our children, their personalities are also different.
I'd say to find out about the parents, listen to what your breeder tells you (we really get to know our pups!) and perhaps find out if they have any older pups that were similar as babies (same parents)...and how did their coats/temperaments turn out?
Enjoy!

Hello,

Dexter is a F1B. He has a fleece coat and it not too maintenance. However, we had trouble brushing the front of him (between his head and legs) and he got some mats and we recently had his hair cut. He really does not shed at all (best thing). In terms of personality, our friend has a F1 and the 2 dogs seem very similar (both very smart, laid back, etc). Of course that is only comparing 2 dogs Smile Here is a before (at 6 months old) and after (at 8 months old)haircut photo:

In terms of introducing him to your other dog, I don't have much to add...maybe the others w/2 dogs can help. Good luck Smile

Thank You everyone for your responses. I spoke with the breeder today and I am about 6 weeks away from delivery. Currently the pups are 4 weeks old. I am comfortable with 10 weeks--because at least I know they'll be weaned and semi-socialized.
Now...that means I can shop for 6 weeks! Smile

One more question for everyone:

Do you comb, trim or shave your dogs?? It seems like shaving would keep them cleaner and less matted for longer, but I'd like to get some opinions out there.

Thank You!! Smile

we did not shave Dexter, but cut him down to about 1/2 an inch on his body (that was his first real haircut and he is 8 months old). We brush/comb him when he needs is (at least 2x a week, sometimes daily).

Hi F1Bnewbee!....welcome welcome welcome....AND congratulations on your upcoming doodle---how exciting! name name name name????

Our Mija is an F1B blue/silver....there are various posts under "stories" that show her pics.....you'll see i posted pics that show her before and after her first groom session....

frankly, I most love Mija's look when her hair is long...shaggy bearded girl....this long fleece wavy coat is a dream...but does require regular upkeep....as the others mentioned, she does self dry-clean and i dont have to bathe her as often...however, I do brush her fairly often, different sections sometimes for upkeep....3-4 x a week....then spray her down with water to get the nice kinks back...

but the summer heat cant be beat, esp. cuz she's dark....now, with the shorter crop (she was cut and clipped, not shaved) which has already grown out to a solid 2.5"-3" all around, we dont have to brush her completely out as much...i do keep track of the areas prone to matt--her face, chin, under arms, forelegs and hindlegs...I keep the poop shoot trim myself with scissors....still do brush her out completely 1x a week though cuz we have sticks, prickers, and burly burrs---plus, its also a love session in this house! Wink

as it gets hotter round here, we're gonna go shorter with the dood's do' again cuz now we know it grows quick...but, as jac mentioned, we're not going too short for fear of sunburn...but, I figure we'll go down to a 1/2"-1"...that will be a dream to upkeep for sure !!!!

good luck and can't wait to hear more from you!...

welcome F1newbee and CONGRATS...can't wait to see pictureswhen you have your baby home with you.

I have a F1 labradoodle Max who has a coat real similar to Gene's jonah.
scruffy wavy and i brush him almost daily more for relaxation though and will handcut his hair this summer. I only trim his tail, beard for now.

i also have a F1 Goldendoodle that is really fluffy, soft and don't know if she'll have more of a F1B coat as she matures. She may end up looking more like Dexter above but wavier???or may even curl up slightly?

so as she progresses i'll see if she going to get a bit of a shave down this summer. iam starting to brush her daily now so she gets used to it. She will have longer hair than max
