I just spent an hour brushing Bella. I am looking forward to getting the Coat King to give it a try. I am thinking of cutting her short if the Coat King does not help. She is just so woolly, everything just gets caught up in her coat, pieces of sticks, pieces of pine trees. Even when she is mat free, combing and brushing her is not easy. Her coat seems very dry and dull, except her ears are shiny and silky. I know nutrition can affect that but she is on great food and I think this is just how her coat is going to be. It kind of separates into dreadlocks immediately after combing. She is soft and fluffy, but definitely not silky. She looks like the sheep you see at the petting zoo, the ones who never get brushed Laughing Since she is so poodly, maybe she got a mainly poodle coat, and maybe this type of coat is why the poodles are usually clipped? What does a poodle look like when their coat is allowed to get long...anyone know?
I have to laugh because when she was a puppy I thought she was the rare F1 who would have that fleece coat. She was soft, silky with lots of curl...then she blew her puppy coat and this one is arriving to stay Laughing
Any and all suggestions and comments welcome!

Yep, I sure do! My Chase is our "Rasta Dog" and I love his coat...I think that you do have a Poodle coat on your pup...you can keep it clipped to about an inch to two inches long and it looks great. Poodle coats are soft as silk though, so if it is rough feeling that could mean it is more Lab in texture.
NuVet vitamins are really good for coat and skin...I think that is the brand, Diane and Linda swear by them.
Here is my Chase...I love his look...in fact, I can't tell you how many people ask me if my chocolate Labradoodle is for sale...I only have one chocolate dog...my Rasta Dog Chase! LOL

Linda, it sounds like you may indeed have the wooly poodle coat. Deva gets that same thick matty look on her hips, denoting a dense undercoat. I finally raked one leg and hip and removed gargautuan amounts of hair. She looks much better and the coat doesn't "solidify" as quickly now. From the description of the Coat King, it would probably be more comfortable for the dog and might be a real help in thinning the undercoat.

I'll defer to Jac's expertise, since she's got the fuzzy dog And the Coat King, but it sounds like a winner.

Chase is Gorgeous! Curly locks, indeed!

Thanks everyone! Jac, I LOVE Chase! Do you trim his face? I can barely see Bella now with all the curls on her face. I have to take her to the groomers, even if just to get her nails done. Should I Coat King her first? What should I ask for if I do get her trimmed? Help, it's like being a new Mom all over again! Laughing

Thanks everyone...I think that Chase is very special too...he is as loving as he is beautiful.

Well, I did get the Coat King for all of my dogs, but specifically for Chase. I need to trim his coat before I use it on him. His coat is about 4-5 inches long all over and the "ringlets" are impossible to get through. They are not matted, but still, there is no combing them out! I really don't care to fluff him up, but I do need to trim him before I use the Coat King on him.

On my other dogs, however, it is a cinch! I do have some pretty dense mats, that I will clip out, on Rosie and Nitos...but where they are not matted, the Coat King glides through their coat, pulling out tons of loose hari, but not hurting the dogs. No pulling at all. You will be so shocked to see how much hair you get with this tool!

So, Linda, I'd tell the groomer that you do not want a froo froo Poodle clip, most people like the "puppy cut" for their Poodles, I like that too. I don't like the shaved face, but lots of people do...it's a personal choice. I do trim Chase's face at times. I clip his beard and around his eyes. Be very careful! I use my fingers like sissors and take the hair between the fingers, placing the palm of my hand over his eyes and then I cut the hair...that way there is no worry of poking his eye or of getting hair in his eyes. I also do this when he is very sleepy or relaxed.

Finally, here is a good link for grooming instructions: http://www.idog.biz/QuickDownloads/Professional%20Groomer%20Inst.pdf
If that doesn't work, go to www.idog.biz and click on the "quick downloads" button, then "grooming".

Wow, thanks so much Jac! It does seem like Chase and Bella might have similar coats. My lifesaver has been the GroomaRake. It keeps the mats away, but does not fluff her up as much as a brush and it is much easier to get thru the ringlets. Thanks again!

Thank YOU Linda! I'll look into the GroomaRake...you can never have too many tools to help with the dogs!

Hi all! Found this old thread and had a few additional questions.

Jac- What does the Coat King do to Chase's fur? He doesn't have an undercoat right? Boo doesn't have an undercoat either (he's a fleecy/wooly combo, I think) and I'm wondering how the Coat King would work on him. Does it just cut thru any knots that Chase has, or does it actually thin out/remove any hair? Is there any tugging at all?

Linda- how would you compare the Coat King to the GroomaRake/GroomaComb? Do you like one more than the other? Or does each one work better on the different types of hair- like the dreads or the curlies?

Sorry for all the questions! You can tell that I'm getting a little tired of the long daily grooming sessions! Rolling Eyes I have a few tools I like (a Chris Christensen T-brush, a CC poodle Buttercomb, and a boar bristle brush), but it still takes too long. And now that the weather's warm, Boo goes swimming, and, well...

That's how he "air-dries". Oy. Shocked

Hey, Jac, you just send those chocolate wannabes on down to Auntie Deb. I have a couple of spares... very small for the moment, but growing like weeds! Is there such a thing as a obese puppy? I've got one closing in on three pounds already, ten days old! (fifteen ounces on May 16 arrival)

I keep trying to post pix, but PhotoBucket uploads efforts keep failing. Ah, well, try the web site for a photo fix.

Hey Deb, I certainly will send those wannabe's to you!
The pups are growing well! I am always thrilled for such great weight gains!

Well, I have not used the Coat King for a while...but when I did use it, basically it just acted like a comb with a razor and I believe that it simply cuts hair out and that is how it goes through the mats, but I don't think it is necessary to use it on a normal brushing...it will thin the coat!

I used something similar to the coat king on Deva once. It did lighten her coat quite a bit, to the extent that her once super thick coat no longer held itself up, and tended to flop over a bit. (She's flopping again, so I suspect my groomer had a go with it on a recent visit.) My keeper cream puppies also have the super thick coat, even moreso, Firm like their cream sire. I may try one of these on them. I used the Les Poochs brush on Lavender last night, which is magical in removing mats, but left her super thick coat like an impervious fuzzy "stand-up" mass of sheep's wool. Perhaps a bit less hair would serve her well.

Mine are Aussie bloodlines, which differ widely from the early gens, and I've been burned before on taking advice on grooming/bedding from the early gen folks, so please take any cross-type advice with the thought in mind that there may be a difference in reaction to a certain bedding or grooming aid.

Personally, I love my Les Poochs brushes, particularly the Emergency Matt Zapper for when things begin to get out of hand. Deva's Pro Firm brush was a bit much for my puppies, but this time I've got a new "Soft" brush which should be much better socialization in terms of a gentle intro to grooming for the tiny ones. I've tried it on my own arm and think it will work just fine.

If you can find a local breeder/vet/groomer, etc. who can order them wholesale, they hold a sale on occasion that permits the purchase of a single brush at the "12 or more" bulk wholesale discount, which will help aleviate the pain on the pocketbook.

Thanks for sending those chocolate wannabies, Jac. I sent you someone over the weekend who wants an F1B. Don't recall if you have any litters at present, but know you'd help them with a good dog!

LINDA not sure if you caught my post on Max's grooming
BUT OMG the groomer used BEST SHOT and then the COAT KING
it really got out all the undercoat .....the groomer could not believe how much hair Max had, I did cause i was going nuts trying to keep up with sweeping 2x a day with the seasonal shedding of winter coat

Boo has such gorgeous curls! OK, my groomer said NOT to use the Coat King on Bella. He grimaced when I said I used it once. I think in dogs without the undercoat it must just thin ALL the hair like Deva said. I'm not sure though. Max sure looks great, but his coat is totally different from Bella and Boo. The GroomaRake is inexpensive and a must have in my book, along with the Groomacomb. These let you run thru his curls fairly easily with no frizz. The groomer said to give up brushing on Bella and just use combs Smile I think before I used a Coat King I would trim Boo to a summer cut so he can swim without tangles.
