On Friday night Denver got stung multiple times by hornets. He was stung around ten in the evening and by 11pm he was unrecognizable.
His eyes were swollen shut. I had taken him out in his yard for piddle time and then brought him in and put him in his crate. (all seemed fine at this time) One hour later, my husband came to get me out of bed to take a look at Denver. I was shocked as I have never seen an animal look like this. I called my vet immediately and she told me to get some Benadryl into him right away and if he did not look any better then take him to emergency animal clinic. Husband went to all night drug store to get Benadryl as we did not have any. Half hour later we were off to the emergency animal clinic as Denver's reaction was too severe and I was just terrified. I am sure that all of you know what it is like to have an animal in such distress and you feel powerless to help. I was crying, Denver was crying and Hubby was being my rock. We were at emergency for three hours Denver got injections and other meds and we took him home. Between Friday night and now, Denver has been seen by my vet for follow up injectionsand more meds. Sunday Denver spent the day vomiting and trying to rest. My vet will be treating him again today.
I can see that he is starting to look much better and I am starting to feel some relief.
Denver is one of those dogs that has life threatening severe reactions to insect stings and as he is only 4months old, how could we have known?
I tell this story to you all because this site is a wonderful source of information with some very very caring people and I needed to vent
and knew you would understand my fears. Also as I have heard in this forum many times Get your animal vet care immediately as we did, I know it saved his life as his throat could have easily closed up.
Thanks for listening

I am sooo glad Denver is going to be alright! What a scary thing to go through. When my toy poodle was a puppy she swelled up from the vaccination she got. It was the Leptospirosis part that did it. So, I know a little bit of the panicky feeling. I had to rush her back to the vet and they gave her something through an IV. It's good that you shared your story to remind us to keep a close watch if our dogs get stung.

Blueteal!, I am sorry you have had to go through that, no-one knows what it is like for your poor animal to be in pain, unless you have experienced it. I hope Denver is feeling better, he is very lucky that he had careing parents to look out for him. We dont know how our animals feel they can only let us know in their little ways, we need to observe them at all times to keep them safe _________________ angie |

Oh my goodness. It is incredible how much it hurts to see our babies sick. Thanks for the post...it never occurred to me that a dog could have such a reaction. But obviously they can. Good idea to keep benadryl around. I'm glad Denver's going to be alright, but don't be surprised if he's not his usual self for a while. The last time I got a yellow jacket sting (just one!) I had severe pain at the site for about a week. _________________ Lisa and George and Gracie

Outside of a dog, a book is your best friend, and inside of a dog, it's too dark to read.

not that having benadryl around would have helped you, but I do agree.
I always have Benadryl as I had a standard poodle have a reaction to a vaccination as well. We were lucky and the benadryl worked for us.
Do you need to keep a bee sting kit now with you in your home and car in case it happens to your baby again?

Denver is almost back to normal, but still sore where he was stung,
probably 6 to 1o times. My vet is working on a Epi Pen for him as they currently do not have them for dogs(she is working on the correct dosage)
I will then have to have it on hand at all times.
Thanks to all of you for being so caring

That happened to my Doodle a few months ago.. I came home from work and was fixing dinner when i looked at him and thought something looked different about him.. His lips were turned inside out even the whole inside of his mouth was swollen, eyes swollen shut, nose running, ears swollen. Ofcouse I freaked out, called the vet and he said to give him a bath and a reaction med.. I was convinced the apartment ppl had sprayed him.. i was thinking about moving.. but sence i read your post, i now know that was prolly what happened to Ryman _________________ I love Rylee Brutus! |
