We have a new doodle named Murphy and he is great! He is 5 months old and weighs 45lbs. He is really smart and is learning his comands very well. He loves to run and chase. I have never seen this in a dog before but he jumps straight up in the air with all 4 legs leaving the ground. He gets about 2-3 feet off the ground when he does this. He only does it when he is running and playing. He makes us laugh so hard when he does this Laughing. This is our first doodle and we love him so much already.

Hello and welcome!
Sounds like you are in for some entertaining moments with your dood!
I think it might be the Poodle in him...Poodles are really quite athletic and very, very graceful!
My standard Poodle, when playing ball with the other dogs, will jump straight up and do a 90 degree turn to avoid a collision...it is amazing!
I can't wait to see your puppy!

I concur, I think its the poodle. Smile

my first poodle was a 7 pound apricot and he used to run around in the ivy in front of my apartment, I was 17. He would hop just like you have described and he looked like a bunny hopping around the jungle sooooo I used to call him a jungle bunny until my neighbors informed me that it wasnt politically correct. You should have seen them trying to explain it to me I had never heard the term before Embarassed

Hi all... I am wary to post this because I don't want anyone to jump to any conclusions...

I have read in several places that one of the warning signs of Hip Displasia is bunny hopping rather than a traditional gate when running. As I said before I don't think that this necessarily means your puppy has HD, but I would be sure to watch for signs and get a hip X-ray at time of spay or 2 years of age (when hips stop growing). If detected early there is a great deal that they can do for HD which is why I wanted to post this. Sorry to be the killjoy, ut it is so important I couldnt NOT share the info. Confused

Kelly, you are absolutely right and that was my first thought too...but as I re-read this post I thought that the hopping was different. The HD hopping is where the two front legs are on the ground and the back legs sort of limp or spring forward (because the dog uses muscles that relieve the stress on the hips) where the hopping that is described here seems to be more of a springing into the air on all fours...which is a healthy Poodle jump. (At least that is my take on it...I hope that I am right.)

But what you said is correct and anyone with a dog that hops like a bunny (from its back legs) could be looking at some serious hip problems and absolutely should get their hips checked. Thanks for mentioning this.

Thank you for the concern, when I have him into the vet the next week I will talk to her about this. I don't feel like he has a problem, when he jumps it is all 4 feet at the same time. He is usually running and very excited when he does this. He is very athletic and runs and jumps a lot, I'm amazed at some of the things I have seen him do. Surprised
I would love to attach a picture of him and I even have one of him jumping...but I haven't figured out how to do it yet???

I think that you are right, your puppy is just doing the happy dance that Doodles do sometimes (they get that from the Poodle side)...still, it won't hurt to ask your vet.

I'd love to see pictures. If you sign up for photobucket you can download your pictures into the photobucket account and then they have 3 links under the picture, you copy the 3rd link and paste it onto your post. Easy!

What a bunch of sweet and happy pictures! Murphy with the young boy is especially cute! Dakota does the doodle dance too--he is such a clown, if no one is paying attention to him, he will toss his chew bone 3 or 4 feet away and do a hippy hoppy dance around it! Laughing He will repeat this until he gets the attention he knows he deserves . . . Wink
