Beth - Dora looks absolutely adorable. The groomer does such a good job and $20.00 is a steal. I bet I would have to pay $70.00 here in S. Calif. Dora looks alot like my Doc!

Thanks! I love my Dora. She is just as good of a dog as she is beautiful!! She is so good with my kids and if she has something (like one of the kids toys) and I have to get it from her, she won't growl or snap or anything. She just looks sad like, hey i was chewing on that!! I had a husky growing up and she was a good dog too, but she would take your hand off it you tried to get something from her. She was not good with children like Dora.
My groomer is the best. Her name is Helen and she is the biggest dog person I have ever met. Dora is always so excited to see her she pees everytime. She is so patient and good. I almost feel like I am taking advantage because she is so inexpensive and good to the dogs. I always tip her to make up for it! The only problem is that she is booked up weeks in advance!! In fact Dora has an appointment this Friday to get clipped again. She just gets so hot, I am going to keep it short until it cools off. I hate to see those blonde waves go, but I know she will feel better.

Your Dora is Adorable! I live in Havelock (about 40 minutes from Kinston) and have a 4 month old doodle named Kirby. I will be taking him to New Bern on the 13th to be groomed for the first time. Any tips? I don't want him to come home looking like a shaved rat. Smile He's a F1b with a wavy (fluffy) coat. The poor guy has a long beard and his hair is in his eyes all the time. Here's a picture of him last month when we got him.[img]

Funny, I was about to post a grooming question. Pixie is 8 months, and just this past week I've been finding matts - especially in the fine fur on her chest and under her ears. I was wondering if this was what people meant by 'blowing her puppy coat', and after reading some of the posts here, I'm guessing the answer is yes. She has a fleece coat, although it's a little more curly around her neck. Actually it's funny, because there are at least three different textures - the fleece on her back and legs, a fine soft fur on her chest, and more woolly on her neck and head. She looked very much at 4 months like Kirby, in the photo above.

I had her groomed at 5/6 months, and I wasn't very happy with the job. The groomer cut too much around her eyes and muzzle (including her eyelashes), left her with a flat, wide looking poodle muzzle. I took some scissors to it as soon as I got home. And I paid $80 for that grooming! Needless to say, I've been very hesitant about testing another groomer.

Donna, I wanted to say thank you for posting about the Oster undercoat rake. I'd never heard of it before, but based on your post, I just ordered it from Amazon. I spent at least an hour and a half brushing Pixie tonight; the rake can only help!

I have been debating for weeks now whether or not to and how to have our Frenchie groomed. She is soft, woolly with every color known. She has silver body with almost blonde / red muzzle. I'm told the muzzle is a common thing when pups play outside a lot. Her sister Fionna is very lab like. Not a curl on her so she doesn't need grooming. I'll try the list and have really enjoyed this post! By the way, NC doodle owner, where do you live, we're north of Charlotte.

Wow! Your Frenchie looks really similar to my dog, Braly. I'm brand new here so I'll figure out how to post a pic and edit this post later.

Braly is an F1 so he's not terribly curly. His hair also seems to stop at a certain length- about 2 inches which is very convenient. And it looks good too so I'm lucky there.

I prefer to groom him to look more like an Irish Wolfhound. Obviously he's much smaller than a wolfhound but people frequently ask if he's a mini-Irish Wolfhound. Anyway, I've always liked the appearance of those dogs (and their personalities as well!)

So I do his grooming myself. I don't care for the "cute" look that most groomers give labradoodles. They cut their eyebrows so that they look sort of dopey, and my dog is anything but dopey. I trim his eyebrows with regular scissors and a pair of thinning scissors so eh has sort of a "textured" look, as my stylist would call it.

I'm glad to have found this forum. Such nice people and a lot of really helpful and intelligent responses.[/img]

This is him before any grooming. He looks a perfect gentleman now that he's groomed for the summer. I wanted to keep him unspoiled until his puppy coat had grown out. Smile

But I also like the shaggy surfer look.

This is how Fonzie looks a few weeks after his first real grooming. When I brought him, I told the groomer to give him a summer crew cut and just not to make him look like a poodle. He left the tail bush, shaved down the body and left his head sort of blocky. It is a cute summer look. Looks like a different dog, though! He is a lot cooler and easier to dry off. I have actually already clipped his nails again and when he is chewing a bone outside, I am trying to buzz him in bits and pieces to keep his hair short for the summer. He doesn't mind the buzzing and actually likes his bath and blowdry. What a nut!

So what's the consensus about when a puppy should get groomed for the 1st time and how often should it be done afterwards. I've trimmed the eyes a couple of time since we brought home Cooper in mid-April (he'll be 6 months on 6/29) and he hasn't had a bath or shower yet!

There is a great thread on here about grooming that has a diagram for you to take to your groomer. If you do a search you should find it.

Also, many people have suggested that you ask about experience with Doodles when you make an appointment. A senior groomer may have come across them before.

Finally, you could check with a local breeder. Even if they did not sell you one of their own, I cannot imagine that they would not help you out if they know someone locally.

I love this forum, too. We don't have our pup yet but we can't wait!!

So far Oliver has only gone for a bath and tidy. They just brush him out realy good, trim around the feet, eyes etc. Just a bit of a clean up and do his nails too. I really like him shaggy, so we brush often. He's only 7 months though, so he's still not matting too much. Do the wavy lfeece coats matt less then the really curly coats?
