we have decided on a mini labradoodle, female for our family. we have two daughters 2 and 4.

now, how do we decide on the generation, etc....

so many choices, and i want to have as much information before we make any decisions!

any thoughts or direction would be great!

Hi Meredith, welcome and congratulations on your selection!
I applaud your desire to learn as much as you can before making a decision.
I would suggest that if you want to be certian to get a mini, you look beyond the first few crosses. The reason is that you can be more certain of consistency in the size if you know that several generations have produced minis.
Most importantly, look for a good breeder and breeding stock that have passed health testing...I say this all the time when people are looking, but I think it is the most important factor.
There are lots of really good resources out there, it will take time, but you will find the answers you are searching for.

Hi and welcome to the forum, I would suggest also that you find a breeder that has been breeding mini's for a while. Some new breeders think taking a standard size and breeding to a mini will give them mini's the first time around and this simply is not true. Like Jac said go beyond the first couple generations for sure. Ask lots and lots of questions make sure they have good sound healthy dogs with great temperaments.

It is rare to find a mini in the early gen breeding programs. You are more likely to find a real mini by contacting an Australian Labradoodle breeder.

Hi and welcome, Meredith,
You are VERY welcome to post here, and throughout this forum there is A TON of info! Plus many friends who will warmly help, encourage and inform you while you wait and look for your perfect puppy.

One of the first questions that came to mind when reading your post is, what is a miniature doodle, in your thinking? The reason I ask is I've seen people who determine that by weight? Or height? And it wouldn't hurt to ask breeders you speak with what sizerange do they consider a miniature? Or Medium? I've found those answers to vary among good, reputable breeders so you would want to know you understand each other.

I could also agree with Kendra and Jac in priciple, about the predictability of sizing being on your side with multiple generations, but as a breeder hoping to have some miniature F1b's this spring, I'm honest enough that I won't promise a size, but I will tell them what the stud-owner expects, or predicts in our puppies' size, because SHE has seen and bred many F1b litters with her stud and gives a height and weight range based on her experience. It is my understanding that sizes will vary more than a little in such a litter. I can hardly wait to find out!

I hope this combination of answers from a number of breeders is helpful.
