I guess my 1st question is WHY?
have they done research on breeding, apprenticed with a breeder, plan on doing full testing on both dogs what is the purpose to creat a new breed, or is it temperament or because they'd be cute? or want a puppy just like the one they already have. I am just trying to layout some of the things that needs to be seriously thought and well planned out. Additionally, what if something were to go wrong medically....does she have enough money and vet on hand as it can be very costly. What if puppies don't sell and/or quickly enough? what kind of health/warranty is being offerred? there are supplies...shots...sonagrams...and much much more. this type of cross hasn't had alot of success but some have with careful consideration to the Generation (f1, f1b, etc) of each different doodle. Thus to-date very few breeders have enough documention on consistency of coat, shedding to nonshedding, any health issues, structure/form etc I know this seems like a lot ..........but in all reality breeding is much more than letting a Dam and Sire breed just once "to see". I am writing this response as to the only information you provided IF you do a search ...there are some excellent posts on this from breeders as well as this cross discussed and JAC both a breeder and site admin to has written an EXCELLENT ARTICLE ON people wanting to breed

Some breeders are calling this mix a "North American Retriever" or NAR (they wanted to get away from the cutesy names) and some are calling them "Double Doodles". There are several breeders experimenting with this now. I can't post any links without going directly to breeder sites. But if you do a google search for North American Retrievers you will find a few with pictures to look at. Have fun!

Heather's Maya is a NAR. I may be mistaken, but didn't Jac have, or is planning on a little of North American retrievers? Sh would have more info anyway.
I agree with Annmarie....there is a LOT of research and thought that must be taken into account before breeding any dogs. I will not hop up on my soapbox though......I promise...... Please keep us updated on your plans, utilize all the information here on the forum. Don't be afraid to ask questions.....we have a great amount of very knowledgeable people with lots of resources and years of experience.

Okay..Gene you don't get on your soap box but I will.
I agree with all Annmarie posted plus..... Breeding any dog is serious business and requires great knowledge and dedication. This forum is a good place to start to get the knowledge.

Hi - is Ryder a F1B or a F1? He's very cute.
It is possible Ryder's dad intends to get Ryder (and the potential mother) tested and is just asking about the mix in general. As the others said there are breeders who are breeding North American Retrievers which are labradoodle x goldendoodle. I've even seen where one breeder in NJ has F1 NARs and bred back to a poodle for a F1B NAR. Good luck.

Ryder, in answer to your question, yes, this type of breeding is done and many breeders are having good luck with the North American Retrievers. In fact, many guide dog organizations have created a "Goldador" which is a Golden/Lab cross, so we are producing similar traits, only with the benefits of Poodle mixed in. I am planning this type of mating in my program. I have produced one litter and they were great pups.
That being said, I do want to echo what has already been written in response to your question. I have always disliked forums that attack people for asking questions, so I hope that you do not feel that you are being attacked. In fact, it is good that you asked, so that we can give you our best advice and suggestions regarding breeding. Breeding is not for everyone and it certainly should not be done without a lot of research, preparation, commitment and soul-searching. I wrote two e-books that Mark has posted, I hope that you will take some time and start there. One is about how to select a good breeder (how to buy a puppy) and the other is about what breeders need to consider before taking the step. Here is a link: http://labradoodle-dogs.net/ebooks/ Please feel free to contact me through PM if I can answer questions for you or help you to learn what you need to do to before you begin breeding. This goes for breeding a male or female..stud owners have just as much responsibility as the breeder owning the female to create healthy, good tempered, happy puppies that won't end up in shelters...or worse. I appreciate the chance to help to advise you and others like you who might be considering this as a possibility. |

You both might want to check with your breeders to see if you have breeding rights before you take this decision too far. (They could sue you if you breed without buying breeding rights.) |

Maya pictured in the avatar is a NAR and when I get my red doodle I really want a red NAR. I love NARs they are great dogs.
As everyone has already said about the breeding I agree. And as Jac said please don't feel attacked. Everyone on this forum loves their dogs (actually to all of us on this forum they are not dogs but really fuzzy and fluffy human members of te family) and we also have very strong feeling about irresponsible breeders and puppy mills (I am not saying you are a irresponsible breeder). There is so much that goes into breeding besides letting 2 dogs mate and selling the pups. There are tests that should be done and contracts that need to be drawn up and screening processes for potential families set up money for vet bills for dam and pups to be thought about food bills for all dogs plans to be made for pups that may not sell etc. Lots of things to think about. If you are planning on breeding there is a wealth of info on this site about breeding. I wish you the best of luck in your decision and please keep us posted as to what your plans are. Like I said I would really love a red NAR!!!! |
