Prayers to you and Daisy for her speedy recovery, and more healthy litters in the future.
Good for you, keeping a close eye on her and taking quick action!

Thanks everyone...you all are so great. I love this forum! Daisy is okay...not great, but better than last night. About an hour ago I had a quick panic that it could have been from her dog food (Iams), but she is improving and I don't think that would happen if it was due to the food. Either way, I'm still looking into it. Her temp was still 102.9 this morning but now it's down to 102. She won't touch her regular food, but I did fix her some bland food that the vet recommended. I was worried about her not producing enough milk for the puppies, but they seem happy and I weighed them today and all are doing well.
She has quite a bit of bloody discharge (sorry..gross I know!), but how much is normal and how long does it usually last? Thank you again for your support and advice!! |

Hi Julie, it's not uncommon for her to have quite a bit of discharge for awhile, it will get less but she will have a discharge for several weeks. Some of my females are very picky when they have had their puppies and what I do is get some good smelling canned food and just mix a little bit of it in with her dry kibble. They will scarf it down

Your daughter is just to cute and sweet wanting to have a tea party. Pups are so sweet I can't wait.

Julie,
I just now checked in...I am sorry that Daisy isn't well! I thought everything would be just fine. How is she today? Iams? I'd get her off of that ASAP! Seriously. Whether or not it is related...it is not a food I'd feed these days. When my girls are nursing they usually have big appetites, but usually not until a day or so after they have eaten all of that gunk. Make sure she gets fluids...lots of fluids. Give her vanilla yogurt (with sugar and with fat...she needs energy and she needs calories...) give it as a treat for her. Feed cottage cheese, or scrambled eggs, cook up some hamberger or chicken...do whatever you have to in order to get her eating. You can give her high quality kibble too, but NOT IAMS! My dogs won't touch kibble (even when they normally will) after giving birth. They are so hungry...and yet they won't leave the pups...so we hand feed them, bite by bite, for the first 3or 4 days... Canned dog food might taste good to her, Merricks puppy food is great. And, maybe her temp is up because you have the room too hot for her, if you are trying to keep the pups warm. Sometimes we wet the mama's coat around her neck with a wash cloth. My mothers won't get out at all, even to potty, unless I actually take the puppies, place them in a basket with a warmer underneath (wrapped in a towell) and cover them lightly, then I put the basket in the whelping box and let her out. She runs out and right back in after pottying...while she is out, I clean up the bedding in the whelping box and when she gets back, I immediately put the pups in with her. She knows that I will and so she is okay with it when I put them in the basket. HOpe this helps... Jac |

Well, Betty, IAMS is on the recall list...now, I KNOW they SAY it is not affecting dry foods, but IAMS and Eukanuba are made by the same company and Eukanuba Weaning food (dry) made my entire litter ill, I almost lost a puppy...and since they are little by little finding that the toxic ingredients are turning up in other places, it just makes sense to me that if IAMS is using the tainted gluten in wet foods, and they are using any wheat product at all in the kibble, most likely, the taint is in there too...the FDA is doing extensive research into IAMS, Eukanuba and a few others...
Seeing my puppy go from healthy and playful to almost comotose in a matter of hours makes me react...I may be wrong...but, so could IAMS. I am just not willing to take a chance with these babies. Of course, there are many who disagree with me...and I am fine with that...but if you choose to continue to use these foods, just watch your dogs for signs, the diarreah, possible vomiting, lethargy...the diarreah is the first sign and we always think "parasites" and wait...and take in stool samples...and wait...and all the while the pup keeps eating the toxic food...if you see signs, take your dog to the vet right away and REQUEST a test for renal failure. It is simple to test for, simple to treat, but deadly if left un-treated. |
