Default vaccines...

Out this month... by Jean Dodds DVM
http://www.vitalitypetcare.com/assets/p ... ccines.pdf
I found this interesting from it!
Q: Should disinfectant be used at the vaccine injection site?
A: No. Disinfectants could inactivate a MLV product.

How many of your vets swab with alcohol?

Thanks, Judi, I always like to hear what Dr. Dodds says about vaccinations.

I read in the breeder book that we should never use alcohol at a vaccination site because it is an anti-coagulent (sp?) and can lead to unnecessary bleeding. I didn't know that...

I would think alcohol is OK as a disinfectant. It should be evaporated and gone before the needle touches the skin. It cant deactivate the vaccine if it is not there anymore. But the phrase "disinfectant" can also mean a soap/clenser/iodine which is water based and would not evoporate and then would still be present at the injection site to cause an issue. I would prefer any advice like this to be more specific in wording. Did it say anywhere not to use alcohol? How do you weigh the risk of deactivation to the risk of an infection at the injection site?

Good point Todd...the alcohol part was a small comment in a book, nothing else discussed...

But, now that I think of it, I have never seen my vet (any of them) use a disinfectant or alcohol prior to giving a vaccine or even implanting a microchip.

Is there any specific vaccines for doodles? If so please list and post all of them. Thank you!

if the proper protocol is followed in any injection clinic i would think that
such mishaps would prevented..the risk is way out weighted by the benefits of proper vaccinations..
