Can you determine a COI equivalent by DNA test? Hypothetical question. If you are breeding your F1 to a poodle and you do not know the poodle pedigree behind your F1 because it was not regestered, you do not have the pedigree, or you flat out don't trust the predigree given (it happens), how can you be sure you are not breeding to a close relative in your F1 x Poodle breeding? I have found a lot of parentage type DNA testing but can that tell you if the two poodles are siblings, cousins, aunts-uncle degree of relatedness? I emailed the same question to vetgen and I'll post a responce if I get one. Just food for thought if you do not have AKC pedigree's behind your lines.

I don't believe that you can tell the COI but I do think that you can "rule out" relationships. I don't know how accurate it would be without the parents...when I had Chase DNA tested for parentage, we had Chase, his mother, and his maternal grandfather and the testing came back that they were a match...still, they said that it would be much more accurate with the maternal grandmother's DNA too.
The good thing is that you have quite a lot of DNA on record with the AKC, the bad thing is that you can't ask for a matching unless you have the approval of the breeders/owners for each dog tested. That is why many Poodles are registered as "foundation stock" with Doodle organizations. It simply means..."This is a Poodle and all of his offspring will link back to him and no further." It isn't much, but it is better than no linking at all. Bottom line is that you can't know for certain because too many lines have been falsified over the years and I believe that a large percentage of registered dogs are really not blood relations to the lines they are linked to. Cynical, huh? |
