GEEZ what is next!?!?!?! And all these companies operate and sale products under so many names, or resale to other companies who repackage the same product under their company name - how are you supposed to know what is safe? MY GOSH!!! Complete home made w/ homemade treats is looking better and better.

The only treats I give anymore are a rare Bully stick and I also picked up a bag of sheep lung (reminded me of rice cakes...), all made in the US.
Outside of that, I make the pumpkin cookies, give organic beef knuckle bones & pick out biscuits VERY carefully. The scary part is that these are apparently made in the US??!! Looks like I need to buy a BUNCH of knuckle bones and freeze them, seems to be the only chewie I am comfortable with anymore......

Well, the real problem with all of this is that salmonilla (sp?) can happen in the US and it can happen in organically grown/raised products. In fact, organic products may have a greater chance of disease simply BECAUSE it is organic...not using chemical preservatives...so it is a catch 22...we do what we can but even chicken from the grocery can have salmonilla...ugh...there is no easy answer.
I am glad, however, that we live in an age of fast media alerts. Thanks, Nancy, for posting this. If any of you want to keep up on the latest, there is a web site that is meant to inform ... the administrator started the site solely to keep everyone advised of the information she collects. It is an excellent source. http://efoodalert.blogspot.com/2009/11/ ... -2009.html |

I read somewhere that someone gave raw chicken necks, that had been soaked in Apple cider Vinegar for 1 hr.
This was supposed to kill the Salmonella? I would like to know as I felt I would feel better on giving puppies it this way, although, i wonder if the ACV would turn them off from them...although the ACV is supposed to be really good for dogs,

I think that raw is really a good alternative...and, yes, you risk certain disease...but you do with kibble and canned foods too...so, I guess that you toss the die and see which way to go...
