Default Probe of Nutro Dog Food

Just saw this on a Dave's Garden forum and wanted to share it. Isn't this scary?

I looked first to see if anyone else had posted it. I know there are some people who still use Nutro. I'm wondering whether there's a better place to put it, because this section looks like it's really for breeders, but it's the only one that offers general discussion.

You could post under the last forum, "General Chat". That's for everyone.

HI i'd rather keep this post in one spot as it confuses people with 2 posts with the same topic
and keep all replies in one place as trying to merge 2 posts into one doesn't work when i try it.

If you want i'll move it

BUT many topics in general discussion are read daily.

BAck in 2006 shortly after we had Max he was on NUTRO and we had major problems took a while to figure out maybe it was the food
we then fed him homemade food for 4.5mos

i'll NEVER feed Nutro to any animal i ever have.

This is VERY scary! My labradoodle is 9 months old and when I took her to the pet store to decide on food, the manager of the store insisted that Nutro was the best choice. I have been feeding her the Lamb and Rice for 6 months now and haven't noticed any side effects. However, after reading that article, I feel the need to switch...immediately. Does anyone have a suggestion as to what I should switch her to?

Hi, welcome to the forum!

These things can be very scary and it is so frustrating that the dog food manufacturers try to hide what is going on. There is another problem with many major dog foods and that is any product made with fish meal is not something I would recommend... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ethoxyquin

So, I look for good quality foods, made in the USA, available at a reasonable price...without fish meal! I personally feed California Natural because it is priced okay and it is usually available. My dogs will eat it and they do well on it.

There is another product that Judi, from this forum, recommends and that is Dog Lover's Gold. It is only sold in certain areas, but Judi uses it and says that her dogs love it and that they are doing really well on it. (Judi's dogs have allergy issues with some foods)... http://www.dogloversgold.eu/

Frankly, if I only had one or two dogs, I would feed raw. (Or if not raw, then home cooking, supplemented with a doggie vitamin.) Hope this helps.

It's ironic because I just bought her a large bag of Nutro two nights before I read this post. While I was at the store buying it I did ask the manager if there was something else I could feed her because she has stopped eatting it. She was eating 2 cups in the morning and 2 at night, now I can barely get her to touch half a cup, even when I add raw food. The manager said Nutro was the best she can be on, so I purchased another bag. At this point I am tempted to take the opened bag back. It's a shame that a huge pet food store is pushing this brand due to financials, instead of telling us what is really best for our dogs.

Yes, that is very sad...and frustrating...in fact, we can't even rely on our vet to give us good advice because they are usually selling the bad products so they push them! *sigh*

I took opened bags of Taste of the Wild back because my dogs were getting ear infections...they took it back without a problem.

then there s those who have so much loyalty to a particular food..that no matter what facts you
present to them..they just nod their heads without listening..

Toby s refusal to eat his Nutro was just his way of saying..*IM SMARTER THAN YOU*..gotcha dad

I am new to this forum and disturbed by this information. Our breeder recommended Nutro and we have been feeding Cooper NATURAL CHOICE® Small Bites Puppy Chicken Meal, Rice & Oatmeal Formula since the day we brought him home. He is now almost 7 months and has not experienced any problems with this food. What food do you recommend we switch to?
