Default Ollie's got the runs....really gross...help?

Hello, today we were out for a couple of hours and when we arrived home we heard Ollie crying as soon as we jiggled the key in the lock. He had diarrhea all over himself and in his crate and outside of his crate. Hubby took crate and cleaned it up , then bathed Ollie and got hi smellling better too and I washed the carpets and floors around the crate. Poor Ollie Anyway it was normal after the bath doing the zooms around the house as he always does after a bath. He has pottied once (very loose) and is taking in water fine. I think he's oaky and we are keeping an eye on him. He seems to be looking for something to eat I don't realy want to give him is reagular food, or would that be okay? Should I try to give him something else to settle his tummy? What have others done when this happens. I do not even know what is causing him to have the diarrhea.

Thanks.

I know this sounds cruel..........but no food! His tummy has to settle down until you can figure out what's going on.
Give lots of water.
Tomorrow, start the boiled rice and hamburger in small amounts.

Poor, poor OLLIE!!! I hope whatever it is goes away fast! Or..take a sample in to the vet.

We used 1/2 cup of white rice to 1/2 cup of cooked and drained hamburger.

Start this slowly tomorrow. Maybe try 1/2 a cup a see how Ollie does with it. Then build to the amount of cups you give him per day of his normal food for a few days, but definitely until the diarrhea is gone.

Are you calling the vet tomorrow? Does Ollie have a temperature? Poor Ollie!

I will give the vet a call in the morning. No, he doesn't have a temp at all. (hopefully I did that right....first time taking his temp....and he was NOT amused) His temp was 101. I think that is normal isn't it? I will try the rice and hanburger in the morning for him and see how he does.

Poor Ollie - not very nice for him (or you!). I always make the rice quite soft and fairly wet...just to make sure that he's getting lots of fluids if he's not very keen on drinking loads of water. Also good old mashed pumpkin...a spoonful or two to help soothe his poor tummy. Hope he's better very soon

Whenever i see your avatar I think it's Charlie for a split second...they are so alike!

ohhhhh i feel for you and Ollie ......i went thru that long time ago with Max.

if you can when that happens fast him till the next meal aka half a day, SO the intestines can try to calm down as thier
irratated. a homemade diet is easier on their system. IF it persists more than a day i'd take a sample to vets to rule out
parasite .....also over feedign a dog can cause diarrhea or i knwo with mine bully sticks or steak w/fat etc

i just made a big batch of homemade food which you lived closer
oatmeal 1/2 cup, 1/2 cup chicken, crushed pineppple 1 teaspoon, pumpkin 1 teaspoon, small slice sweet potato with skin on, 1 probiotic pill (adicdolfilllus sold in walmart or herbal sections). you can even add pedalyte to his food if the diarrhea is mostly water, 1 fish oil or salmon capsule ONCE a day

IF you doodle goes the other way meaning strains to go........cut back on rice or oatmeal amount and omit pineapple for a day.

I am sorry that I didn't see this last night! I hope that Ollie is doing better today.
The advice you have been given in right on target, of course!
I would add that you can give him some PeptoBismol. I give my adult dogs about a teaspoonful after each loose bowel movement.
You can also try Kopectate, if you want...but Pepto seems to work best for us...and it is also good when they are vomiting up bile.
As always, checking with the vet is in order if it concerns you or it goes on more than 24 hours...or if Ollie becomes lethargic or won't take fluids.
You can check for dehydration by looking at his gums (should be pink, not white or grey) and by taking a fold of skin between your fingers (pinch on the top of his neck) and when you let it go, if it remains in a peak, he needs fluids.
I am glad that his temp is normal, that is a good sign...congratulations on learning how to take it!
Dehydration is an emergency situation.
I hope that this will pass with good diet and a little rest...and lots of love. (By the way,I boil chicken, add rice and cook it until it is muchy and I feed it as a broth consistency for the first day, increasing thickness a little at a time. Later, I add veggies such as sweet potato, carrots or green beans. I always add a little canned pumpkin to the broth too.)

I hope Ollie is feeling better
here is what i send home with my families,

Also i have found that sweet potatoe and pineapple (crushed water not syrup, natural) Works better then pumpkin
and Oatmeal works better then rice (thanks annmarie)
here is annmaries recipe ( little bit of me thrown in,,) LOL

Tummy’s

Sometimes the stress of moving to a new home or any stress can cause pups to get diarrhea
Do NOT rush your pup to a emergency hospital, there are much worse things they can pickup there.
take in some poop to be checked at your vet when they open just in case its worms or coccidia

We recommend a bland diet, rice and boiled chicken or Hamburger,
Small portions 3-4times per day..after 2days soak pup food and add a little to the mixture

If worming or antibiotics is suspected of causing diarrhea, adding a little bit of yogurt can help put the Good bacteria back into the digestive system

**Pineapple can help w/mushy poops but only give a small puppy
1 teaspoon per meal ...too much will make them constipated

**pineapple: antioxidant, and loaded with vitamins

**sweet potato in 1/4 in slice is also great for sensitive tummies and/or when dogs have worms or mushy poops.

Bland Diet ,
Make up One cup Cooked oatmeal (make like normal)
Small meals 4-5times per day (about ½ cup each feeding)

1/2Cup Oatmeal
1tsp Pineapple,
1 fish oil tab (pierce and squirt out,for adults leave caplet in food, for puppies I don’t)
1tbls Plain (not low fat) Yogurt
Boiled Hamburger or Chicken Rinsed Well after boiling (handful to taste)
Add a little kibble after about 4feedings ,then a little more, until up to all kibble feeding again
This diet should be used for a couple of days at least to get stomach back on track

**Canned pumpkin ......1 teaspoon for small puppy, 2 teaspoons for 8mos or older, easy on intestinal tract ..too much causes mushy poops! This also works well for constipation

NOTE: overfeeding a puppy or older dog can cause mushy poop

He did have a bully stick the night before and yes Bully Sticks can make his stool soft occasionally, but this was very watery diarrhea, beyond soft stool. Hope he is still able to have the Bully sticks....he loves them soooo much, but we only give them as a treat once in a while. We were at my friends house the night before....maybe he got into some garbage or something.

Thanks Jac. I didn't know you could give a dog Pepto. We gave him some rice and hambuger today, 1/2 cup in the morning and he just gobbled down a cup for supper. So far so good. He seems fine tday. I called the vet and he said to just keep an eye out. Make sure he's taking in fluids and that the rice and hamburger are fine to give. Stool is soft but not runny today. He's playful and seems himself.

Thanks fot the tips on dehydration. I had no idea what to look for. I did leave the rice quite wet (a bit soupy) for Ollie. He was hungry and thought it was a great meal.

you can go to the store get a sweet potato and crushed pineapple in a can give a little of that,
if he got in the trash or anything the potential of ingesting something that could cause a blockage is there as well
maybe you should see your vet as soon as you can just to be safe

Thanks Nancy, this is great information. I have cut and pasted it into a word document to save on my computor for future reference if this happens to Ollie agin. He seems to be doing much better today. I am sticking with the bland diet today for him.

I think the only trash he could have gotten into would be the compost bucket that my friend leaves outside the door. Veggie peals and such. Wouldn't he a temp if he had a blockage, or be much sicker?
