Now i am doing some research about doodles as i have not got a clue.
This breed is fairly new to us,as we have had Border Collies for many years. Now just found out that a breeder with a F2 labradoodle is going to breed with a mini poodle can this be true ? Surely a big labradoodle and a little poodle no way. How does this work,my mind is working over time. Steps perhaps. |

hi, and welcome!
Yes, an f1 or an f2, if they are presumably 50/50 Lab/Poodle can and possibly "should" be bred to a Poodle...of some size. Most of us on this forum think that a gradual or careful downsizing is a more conscientious way of bringing down the doodle size. But it happens! I bred my f1 girl Copper - who is medium, by the way - to a Miniature Poodle and just Thursday we got a LOVELY litter of babies! Last year's litter of the same breeding gave us Doodles that are 20-30 lbs. (10-15kg?) Now, Copper is one of the smaller Labradoodles, at 18" at the shoulders, and her male was 13" I think, so the size difference was minimized to get these smaller dogs. But yes, we did it. And interestingly enough, in the whole science of hybrids it is a common practice to go from an F1 generation to an F1b generation which stands for F1backcross. So if this dog is an f2 from an f1xf1 breeding, a backcross to a poodle makes sense scientifically as well as practically. I hope that helps! And I hope that the breeding you just heard of is with a not-so-big Labradoodle. |

Maureen is right on...of course!
If they use a smaller standard and breed to a moyen or miniture (not a toy!) it should be okay...I prefer moyen, because they are a bit larger...but it is commonly done. |

I do know the labradoodle think she is an F2 and she is a big girl.
I just really did not know this could happen. But thank you for letting me know,i learn more and more each day. Well done Copper and for having a beautiful litter. |

It's the most common way alto if you can find a little guy who will let you hold him for the tie, you've found a GEM! AI also helps breeders work with a host of long distance breeders, which is really handy!
(no pun intended of course!) |
