Congratulations on getting the testing! That is a huge commitment to making sure that the puppies you help to produce will be healthy and live long, happy lives! Kudos!
Well, Hips, Elbows and Eyes are a good start...but most breeders check for other things now too...for instance, when you get the hips and elbows done also have them check patellas. Sometimes they do that with the hip test anyway, but it is a good idea to ask. Then, have the vet give a general exam, with emphasis on his heart. I always, every time my dogs breed, have them tested for Brucellosis. (Very important test, not too expensive...a blood test.) Most of us have also done DNA testing for many genetic diseases. It is not required, but is very good because it rules out two very important diseases, vWD and PRA. Some breeders test for PRA through DNA and they don't do annual CERF exams...it is up to the breeder. The fun thing about the DNA is that you find out what colors your dog carries...this is really important for a stud because, as we have mentioned, black is not the most popular, but if you find out that he carries cream/apricot/red and brown ...he will be more in demand. But...bottom line, with his hips and eyes done, you will probably find a breeder who would use him. Likely it would be a newer breeder though...not one with a big program. However...since he is an F1 he may be in demand for a Poodly F1B or for those of us who have female Poodles... How big is your boy? How much does he weigh? Do you know anything about his parents? What color were they? What color were their parents? If you have an AKC number for your dog's parents, you can order a pedigree from the AKC...pedigrees are important to breeders because they want to be sure that the lines are not related. Amazingly, I bought my male Poodle in Canada...and almost every Doodle that I have seen so far (early generation) have his grandfather in their line! You just never know. |

Is it possible to breed an F1 to an F1? It just seems like they'd be adorable, but has it been done?
I was also wondering what a breed back to a lab would be like--probably adorable, but less in demand due to the shedding. |

Toby s a blondy most of the time..then turn s a shade of peach during the summer..i just love the color..but, having seen blacks..you really learn to appreciate all of the colors..their personalities are what im really attracted to..and am rather color blind now..
I got Toby with breeding rights..but, it did cost a bit..later we dicided not to breed him and sent the neutering papers to the breeder and they return d the money we had additionally paid for the rights.. if we had decided to breed him..it would have been with a black standard poodle in town..results would be some nice either all black or peach F1b s..and perhaps a parti thrown in.. |

Hi, I too am looking to breed my Labradoodle. She is a miniature so size would matter. I live in Orange CA., so we are very close. Her name is Maggie, she is and F1 also. She has a wonderful personality, is very social with dogs and people. She is very gentle with children and the elderly and is particularly intuitive with "special needs" individuals, especially children.
Would love to hear back from you, Peggy |
