First off...WELCOME!!!
If it looks more of a licorice color....I would say he is turning "Blue". It is kind of a gun metal color. It can take up to 2, even 3 years to totally change. It is common for a black dog to turn brown on the muzzle, but then the legs are changing......
If he is out in the sun a lot....his color can fade too, but if he is brownish at the roots, I would say he is turning Blue.
PS: The grayish dog in my avatar is my Blue Marley...
