On this coming weekend, the six puppies (8 weeks old) rescued in Texas will fly up to New England for adoption!! The foster parents are personally carrying them in the plane.
They are all black,5 with flat coats, one curly coated. Mom is a standard poodle, babes are the result of an accidental breeding with a brittany spaniel. The pups were dropped off at a high kill shelter in Texas, and IDOG rescued them and has fostered them. It looks like they may be on the small size, perhaps 35-45 lb. All girls. They will be fostered in MA and CT. Applications can be obtained online from the IDOG site, or via the link at petfinders. They have had their first shots. http://www.petfinder.com/petnote/displa ... d=14128775

Everybody, the puppies are still in Texas, and have all come down with horrible diarrhea. They went to the vet today who thinks it's coccidiae. They're on 3 meds. I'm hoping it's not as serious as parvo. Does anyone know anything about germ?

Liz, I am so sorry...do you have any news about the pups?
When you ask if we know about the germ, I don't know if you are asking about Parvo or Coccidia...of course, the breeders are familiar with both...generally we have all seen coccidia, and we pray that we never see parvo... Coccidia can be cured with meds...Parvo often takes pups...and when they survive, it sometimes gives them lifetime problems... I hope that you have some good news about them today... |

Wonderful news!!! The pups do not have parvo, it's coccidia!! They all stopped their diarrhea within 24 hrs of starting the meds. I've been very nervous, since the foster home we hired to foster the litter solely fosters litters, and with the severity of Parvo, my heart has been in my throat.
They are all thriving, robust, and according to the foster, have good temperaments. They'll fly up tomorrow from TX with 3 IDOG volunteers, so they'll ride in the cabin. I'll meet them at the airport, crate and blankets, newspaper, cleanser and paper towels in hand. They'll then go to 3 foster homes, in pairs. I don't how you breeders do it, you have so much more to consider, physically provide for, and worry about. I won't rest until they're up here, and safe in their foster homes. While I LOVE watching childbirth, and puppies nursing their mama, I think I'll stick with good old grownup doodles!! PS: They all look very "labby", looks like Dad's genes are sure strong/ he's apparently a brittany spaniel.

The puppies are finally here from Texas!! They are absolutely adorable, very social and sweet. They are starting to look more doodly, since dad is Brittany spaniel, maybe we can call them Britspoodles!!! 6hours after they flew in, I went to work a 12 hr overnight shift at the hospital, and Harry was in charge of the puppy wrangling. He did better than I did, he played with each of them 1:1, and noticed they all wolfed the food and the 2 little runts weren't getting as much food, so at breakfast he fed them in 6 separate bowls!!
Today I'm heading up the Mass Tpke to meet foster moms to bring 4 pups, and the last 2 will go to CT. Tonight I think I will really sleep. I never knew how much puppies pee, YEE-GADS, they must be going every hour. I really don't know how you breeders can do this 24/7. My hat is off to you.

YAY!! This is such good news after all that stuff with the coccidia. Bogart had that when he was a pup and did fine.
I often wonder how the breeders do it as well. Quote:

Oh, that is such wonderful news! There is nothing worse than fearing a parvo outbreak in a litter of puppies. I am so very glad that the pups did not have it.
Yes, it takes actually caring for a litter of pups, especially sick pups, to get a glimpse into what breeding is all about...it is a tough, but sweet job...It is a huge responsibility, caring for puppies. I am grateful for people like you and those other fosters who have the heart to help out...it really is not easy. Best wishes to you all! |

Waiting on Chris to arrive home with Copper and the puppies - they should be home any minute! I've got 2 coming here along with Copper who I am watching until her new foster mom is ready for her tomorrow night or Tuesday morning.
Wish me luck - I think having 4 adult dogs and 2 puppies in my house classifies me as insane.

As you know, the pups are all in foster homes by pairs. However I must tell you this story about my hubby and the pups.
After I got the puppies settled into my home after they flew in on Saturday, I had to run out and work a 12 hr overnight shift at the hospital, leaving Harry to wrangle the puppies. He was much more organized than me, figured how he could corral them all in the all season porch without getting into any dangerous stuff, on the linoleum, while he sat in an armchair in the middle. He delighted in telling me how when he fed them dinner, they attacked the food bowl like little wolves, and within 15 minutes they all pooped, he sat back and watched them "lay their land mines" and then counted up 5 piles, as he tried to figure out which one was constipated. He also saw how the 2 little runts couldn't get to the food while they were muscled out by the bigger guys, so at breakfast, he fed EACH tiny pup in his/her own food bowl!! Before the first 2 pups went off to the local foster home, he picked up each one, nuzzled them to his chest, and told them to have a good life, and he would miss them. So sweet, coming from my big 6'4" guy with big hard working calloused hands.
