Yesterday, as I drove the final leg of a 300 mile trip to deliver 2 high maintenance rescued doodles to their foster homes, I thought of the IDOG volunteers and thanked God.
As I delivered one very stinking rambunctious 60 lb puppy to the foster Dad in a parking lot, I apologetically told him" I'm afraid he stinks like the dog shelter, and you know how we thought he was neutered, well that was wrong, you'll need to take him to the vet to be neutered" and the Dad smiled and just said "Oh, that's OK, we'll take care of those things", and before we parted, I warned the Dad "He's more than a bit jumpy, he likes to take a running tackle at you and aim for your chest", and the Dad who was already telling me what a beautiful boy our little scamp was, reassured me he was up to the task, " well he's only 9 months old, he'll learn fast, and then he'll calm down to be a wonderful dog for someone"... As I delivered my second foster at a highway rest stop, the new Mom readily took the doodle to the grass on a leash as I hauled her dog food and crate into the Mom's vehicle. I warned Mom that the new foster has never lived in a house, and therefore isn't housebroken, and when she's alone in the crate she barks continuously until someone comes, oh and by the way she needs to be spayed soon... and the new Mom smiled and calmly stroked the new dood who had recently been retired from breeding, "Oh we'll be just fine, maybe I'll sleep on the sofa for a while until she feels more comfortable. The housebreaking will happen, she seems like a smart little girl, don't worry, she'll love my pack at home". And then there are the master IDOG volunteers behind the scenes, Shannon and Lynda who hand picked each foster family and arranged several legs of the rescue/transport process, in order for these 2 doodles who will need weeks to months of rehab care in these loving foster homes before they can be ready to be someone's loving pet. I remember the advice my own vet gave me Saturday morning as a took my own new foster to him to check her complicated leg fracture, and the 65 lb doodle reared up on her hind legs trying to kiss him on the face, unknowing she was really clubbing his head with her cast. He reflected that "the teaching you need to give her, the guidance of how to be a well behaved pet is as important if not more so than the healing of her broken leg bones, so she can be a successful pet to someone". Thank God for selfless volunteers who help our doodles find successful pet homes, and give them the opportunity to have a new life.

YES THANK GOD for Fosters and Foster/Rescue Organizations!!!!!
I love how you described the love and caring reactions with the two foster people.......thanks for a warm happy smile to add to my day!!! Fostering: when someone opens their heart and home to help a dog get another chance; both learning at the same time taking the whole package just as it is and making it even better than before. LIZ thank you as well for fostering too and posting this!!!
