Default Possible sick dog from Pet Store

If you guys are mad because we got our dog from a pet store i apologize but we are trying to do the right thing now. I did a bunch of research but didn't do enough. I need help if any of you could lend a hand.

Long story short. Went to a Pet Store that for NOW will remain un-named and they swore up and down they didn't get puppys from puppy mills. Gave us all these reasons why and we bought our puppy and arranged to pick her up a week later. We go to get her and they tell us she has kennel cough and we can't get her for another week. Well it's been almost three weeks now and they have called us once to say she is doing better they will call soon. Now we have determined that this dog is more then likely from a puppymill is Arkansas. We want to invoke our right under the NJ Pet Protection Act to return any sick dog within 14 days of purchase if the dog is sick or dies. The only problem is that they never gave us the dog so we could take her to our own vet. We aren't sure exactly what to do but we want to NOT support them at all. I know what you might all say "we should have thought about that first". But we honestly thought we did and believed these people.

Trust me we are going to take this as far as we can but just wanna get some insight and advice before we go in for WW3 and 4.

thanks,
Jason and Kelly

I'm sorry you are having this problem, really dont know what to tell you as I've never been in the situation nor do I know the NJ law

If you want to not get the puppy, I would tell the pet store that you wantyour money back, they have not given you the puppy you were prmised when promised and see what happens.

other option is to call States attorney office and find out where you stand, which you might want to do anyhow before calling pet store

good luck

Ok I found this website - if you don't find an answer here, maybe you could e-mail them and tell them of your specific situation...

No one should judge and they should refund your money becasue they cannot deliver the puppy.
Good luck and hope there is a healthy puppy in your future!!!!!!

I would see if you could get your money back from the pet store. they did not deliver the puppy when they said they would and it is sick. I am sorry you are in this situation. I hope this hasn't turned you off of labradoodles. They are a great dog!

Im so sorry you are going thru this,

If i read this correctly you have not gotten the pup yet, is that correct?

since the pup is now sick, and you have not taken possession , then you should be in full rite of getting your money refunded immediatly, if not threaten to report them to the BBB in your area, as well as the attorney general, that may get them jumping, otherwise im not sure what to advised,

just to let you know , Dog flu (recent outbreaks) starts showing itself as a cough and goes downhill from there,
treating just for kennel cough wont help if that is the case

I feel sorry both for you and the poor puppy! I'd report them to the BBB immediately, and also to the AG as Nancy suggested, as well as Animal Control in the county where the store is located! you must be heartsick, but like some of the other posters have said, please don't let this turn you off of labradoodles!

If you have given them money,,give them the chance to refund it
THEN report them
let them know your plans ,if they dont redund it,
and then if you truly feel that this is a bad place report report report

I certainly do not condone petstores, but you really need to get your money back before you do anything, it could be a long haul getting refund otherwise, if ya know what i mean

No one here will be mad at you...it is sort of like watching a train wreck...it is just so very sad.
I am heartbroken for that poor puppy. This is why we are all so opposed to pet stores, because of the horrible life for the pup...not because we are against free enterprise. So, it isn't about anger, but helping you now.
The others have given you great advice, I'd follow up with that.
Also, if you put money down, they must have had some sort of contract. Read it carefully becasue you may be bound by it.
Take it to the Attorney General's Office, file a complaint and ask them to help you.
You may have a "consumer watch" program in your area where the news media helps people out in these circumstances. If so, I'd contact them.
The pup must be very sick or they would let him go with you because it costs them money every day he is with them.
If you want the pup, tell them that you will take it, not paying any more money to them, until your vet gives you a clean bill of health and you can subtract the vet bills from the amount owing...put it in writing if they agree.
If you don't want the pup, I am sure that you can cancel because their part of the contract calls for them to deliver a healthy puppy to you. If they can't, they breach the contract.
Good luck...I hope that you will use this sad experience to help educate others.

If you used a credit card call your credit company and cancel the transaction.

thank you guys all so MUCH....we will let you know how it turns out. we are going to call the Ocean County Consumer Affairs first before we go over to the pet store. We have not taken delievry of the puppy yet as they promised and they were very shady when we go visit her. They are just like we will call you when she is better....but that has been three weeks.

We have learned our lesson for sure. Trust me. We have the legislation that you provided the link to and have it printed and thesections highlighted that apply to us.

and it is a sister store to the one in Middletown,NJ.

Yikes,
Jason and Kelly.

I would make my request in the store at a time when they are busy....lots of people around. Don't let them shove you in another room. If they give you the run around, talk alittle louder about the situation so that everyone else can hear the situation.
It may seem tacky but has worked with me in the past when a pet shops wouldn't make a check good that was over a month old. It was hard to tell me they didn't have the cash when it was at the end of the day, there was a long line of customers, and I was only asking what was due to me.(the products sold to them had all been re-sold)
At the one shop when the employee left to talk to the owner, I said to the waiting customers who by now were all aware of the situation..."they sure don't like it when you do it to them!". Everyone giggled.....I got my money in cash.
Hopefully you don't have to resort to this but it might help your situation along at some point.
