Greg and I have been working diligently on the dog runs and condo. We've got the condo built, and it got it's first coat of paint today. It's a rather bright shade of yellow with a black shingled roof. It's 8' wide and 4' deep, divided in half to give them each a good sized space to stay warm and dry. It has a 3' deep porch that extends the whole width so they can lay out and enjoy the day. The run is 32' x 32' with strands of electric wire on top and bottom to discourage digging under or climbing over.
The labs have been patiently watching us build this, so I can't help but wonder if they realize it's for them? Could be we're just the only show in town... but they seem to take great interest in what we're doing out there. I put contact paper inside the houses to make them easier to wipe clean, and Greg caulked and sealed everything up real good so they will be high and dry inside. Our 7 yr old grandaughter crawled inside both to inspect and make sure they were fit for the lab ladies. She gave them rave reviews. We put the condo up on a frame to keep a 4" airspace under, but enclosed it on the outside so no cold air will blow in under the floor. We have rubber mats we'd like to put down for them to lay on, but wonder if they might chew them? While he was at it, Greg put puppy rails in both the houses so we can safely put the puppies out there with them on nice warm days. The plan now is to get the second coat of paint on tomorrow and move them in for the duration of their pregnancies to let them get off those cursed chains and get comfortable with the new digs before the pups come. Less than 2 weeks to go!

This is my dearly beloved with the girls. When they get the chance to cuddle they do it well. LOL They're now in their new digs, and seem to like it!

We had to laugh at the girls. They have been together since they were pups, so are closely bonded. We went out to check on how they're doing out there and found they prefer to sleep in one house cuddled up together! All that space and they still want to be part of a puppy pile. LOL
I guess that answers the question about whether the houses will be big enough for them and their pups later. If one will comfortably hold 2 pregnant adults, it should be fine for mom and babies. They each got a huge new bone today too, so it's like Christmas in August for them! They're so happy to be together they've hardly touched the bones. We played fetch with Montana until SHE wore out today. It's so nice being able to have her run freely inside the enclosure. I hope to never have to put a chain on any dog. I think I was as happy as they were to get those off.

I know what you mean about the chains. I was sooooo thrilled the day they finished fencing off my yard so that Jonah and Miko could actually be outside together instead of having to be either a tangled mess or going out separately! Now if they would just do their business first, and play after........

The girls are so content in their new place that they have quit barking. One of the neighbors had recently told us it was getting to be a bit much, so we were concerned. So now that they're happy and quiet it's a double blessing.
I had to laugh this morning. I had put contact paper on the floors of the houses just to make them easier to clean. It seems Montana didn't like the pattern I chose, so she painstakingly removed most of it in one of the houses. She came to greet me with a piece of it on her tail and another on her hip. We sat out there with them today and played fetch and cuddled for a while with them again, and it's just heartwarming to see the difference in both of them. They've already learned by touching the electric wire NOT to touch the fence; the bones we gave them are almost untouched; and they're using the porch just as we'd planned. It's so cute to see them sprawled there sunning themselves. The biggest shock is that there has been NO digging. Montana had dug canyons and tunnels where she was chained. So I take this as her gift to us for doing this for her. It's so sweet when things work out this well!

The joys of a doggy remodel! I remember when I was putting down peal and stick tiles in my bathroom...with Jonah's help(?), and he had a piece stuck to his mouth and one to his hiney!
