Default outdoor kennel floor type?

anyone out there have an outdoor kennel/ dog run? what type of floor do you have? just grass I thought would get worn away and turn to mud. I thought small stones would get stuck in pads... Im thinking about setting one up for Winston when we have to keep him confined outside.
thanks

the tree bark pretty much keeps the dogs out of the puddles of water..
each yr. we put down about 2 inch of bark..the water will filter down and the dogs rarely get muddy..

and it makes for easier poop as well..
