Default Switched Bogart to Orijen yesterday

For no particular reason.....we just did!
I heard a video on Raw diets and realized that seemed like a real chore for us, plus when I talked to our vet, she said she doesn't recommend raw b/c of the risk of salmonella etc.
So, I started researching foods by googling things like prepared raw foods.
I found a website where you'd have to have this stuff mailed to you frozen and it was expensive.
Suddenly, Orijen popped up as THE BEST.
So, I called our local pet store and she said it was a top Seller and then the vet said VERY,VERY good food! So we did it!

I wasn't home last night when DH gave Bogart his first bowl of it mixed with Chicken Soup for the Dog Lovers Soul. (Chicken Soup is a great food, IMO.)
He said he sniffed it like WT??.....and then just dove in!

I hate the shift of dog food. You have to ween them into it and then see how thier bowels handle it. BUT! This stuff soounds AWESOME! Pretty expensive like 62.95 for a 29.5LB bag.........but we'll just have to work that into the budget!

And Toby only gets 2 cups a day?

It s the one and the same..

Toby eats a cup in the early afternoon..and another cup in the evening..after the evening meal i ll cut the richness of the protein by giving him some milk bones from Trader Joes...

Now, if Bogie is more active you can increase the servings by a half cup till his weight has leveled off..on the side i keep a bag of Bil-jac and Evo if Toby should start to get bored with the Orijen..and i still serve him his beef stew or chicken stew each day..

suddenly he s taken a liking to chicken gizzards..

Hmmm.......I wonder why we were once told that too much protein was not good. Ergo, I said what I said to you and now I'm feeding the same food!
Did they just start the 80/20? Or has that been what you have always used?
Bogart gets 3 cups of food a day and he weighs about 68LBS.
He is fairly active everyday in that he either gets walks of 3-5 miles or he plays for a good hour with a buddy. Rarely does he do nothing.

He seems to really like this food! I'm also using it for treats throughout the day. I have been using the Solid Gold treats, but they're like $12.99 a bag.

We start to puppysit today at around 1 PM until late Sunday. This little Silkie keeps him going! Joey is now a year old, about 13 LBS and these two are the best buddies! Joey is non-stop on playing and goes for Bogart's ears, so Bogart has to keep running or rolling.

good luck with puppy sitting! I have Winston on the large breed puppy. He loves it, he either has more energy, or I am not slowing him down any more!, his farts are next to gone, and his poops are hardly worth the bag they go in now! When I had my Boston, his poop was twice the size of Winston, he gets 4.5 cups on a busy day (he is still a growing boy at 74 pounds)
I do wish that it would drop in price by about 20 bucks a bag at least here in Canada!!

just a word about Origen..or Evo, or anyother with a protein content of more than 30%..cuz they also have more fat..if they start getting a bit
bigger than you d like..you can cut back a cup and replace it with a cup
of Innova..

i find that cutting the protein and fat is the best way to save money and keep Toby s weight i line..90lbs, SHEESH !!

I did nt start any gradual transition to Origen..Toby s got a cast iron gut..and though he picky..he can eat anything without any problems..

when Toby was younger he was nt as picky..but, when he started turning up his nose to food..i need d to switch to a higher grade kibble..I still use
the Evo..but, the Origen is his main stay, cut with Bil-jac..

if Bogie is doing well on 3 cups then stay with it..but, if you find he s putting on a little bit more weight..cut back a cup and replace it with
kibble with less protein and fat..

Since your transitioning from Chicken Soup now you can still use it to cut
the Origen..

and your correct about too much protein not being good..

Granted.....these FAQ's come from Orijen, but I have started researching protein content in general and it appears I may have been wrong. It depends on the balance of what is also in Orijen...I guess.

Lindamarie ? is this the article about how much protein a dog needs?
Protein Requirements for Good Dog Nutrition

there is some truth about how too much protein can affect the kidney functions if the over all health of the dog is compromised..but, a healthy dog should be able to handle high amounts of protein without any problem.

Deepnite.........not sure where I found the article, but the one you just posted is great!
AND.........look at this!
Champion Petfoods | Awards

Orijen is the pet food of the year 2010 and 2011!

I can't stop reading the testimonials either. Nothing but great things to say by people! One of the dogs even lost weight after the vet recommended Orijen! Another one was unable to stand up at 12 years old and after a few months could!
I'm now convinced on Orijen.
We were afraid to just start it by itself as you did, so we are still weaning. Also, we had enough Chicken Soup left over and felt why not use it. Yet, I find myself giving mostly Orijen now with a very small amount of Chicken Soup.
OK......here comes the "poop talk" again! My husband thought I was insane for raging about the firmness and GOOD poops Bogart has now!
Solid, firm and not a whole lot!
